Wrong. This could be a HUGE win for the Yankees. Cano will put up his numbers, but this frees up money for the Yankees to do what they really need to do.

    Pitching.

Wrong again. The Yankees said they were not going to pay that and were not going to 10 years. So Ellsbury or not, he was gone.

    It was expected.

Probably why they did spend what they did on Ellsbury.

And with the Grandyman gone to the Mets... maybe Cashman isn't a stupid as folks have been leading on.

OK, Ellsbury has a much better arm than Damon... hell I have a better arm than he does :)

I can accept that Gardner has a better arm, but it's not about the arm, it's about the hitting and stolen bases.

And as fast as Gardner is, I think Ellsbury is faster.

Gardner will be back in left field. Where he has played outstanding defense and he has improved at the plate since he came up.

Not happy about Cano jumping ship, but at least I can still cheer for Grandy. :D

So do the Yankees have anything even remotely approaching a second baseman yet?

One year deal for about 3M.

    Never heard of him.

So do you think we have any hopes for next year? I'm not sure I agree with Cashman that everyone (even Cano) is replaceable...

Can't wait to see what happens when Cano makes his first Mariner at-bat at Yankee Stadium...

Or if J Zee even dares to enter Yankee Stadium.

I know a little of him because he played on the Rays.

    Obviously a stop gap measure.

I heard Karoda agreed to one more year.

    Break... he did. 16M http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on...ees-hiroki-kuroda-working-toward-oneyear-deal

    We needed that. Good sign.

    Can you spell T-A-N-A-K-A??? ;)

    So...

    CC
    Kuroda
    Nova
    Pineda
    Tanaka???

That doesn't look bad at all.

    In the pen?

    Robertson
    Logan
    Phelps
    Huff
    Cabral

    Lots of work to do...

But that 5 man rotation could be a good one.

Sorry, I have no mercy for Cano.

Leave the NYY for frakin Seattle?

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

This just tells me he never really was a Yankee.

He will feel the wrath of my screams at the TV when we play Seattle.

I totally forgot about Pineda, he's been on the damn DL for so long. He's still playing, is he?

 Yeah, no kidding. He was the next coming of King Felix when we got him. He should be ready for a full season.

    Very interesting...

    Solid outfield.

    L - Gardner
    C - Ellsbury
    R - Soriano/Ichiro

    3rd - Munez?
    ss - Jeet
    2nd Ryan
    1st - Tex

    McCann behind the plate.

We have the makings to dethrone Boston.

Youk is gone right? Wasn't he a 1 and done guy last year?

Nunez is a much better hitter...

There's no news, that I'm aware of, regarding whether or not Youk is still on the team.

Move Jeter to 2nd Base and find a short stop. Maybe they can trade for Jose Reyes.

    Sorry, but in what universe?

CC - coming off the worst year of his career by every metric
Kuroda - lone bright spot but is 38 years old
Nova - not bad, but gotta build the innings back up, may not be able to do 200 next year
Pineda - exactly 1 year of experience, in 2011, then showed up fat and got hurt (throwing shoulder). Even if healthy, isn't going the distance.
Tanaka - new posting system is gonna kill the Yankees here, their big chance was to put up a 75M posting bid, now it's a max of 20M and multiple teams can negotiate. And team that owns him may not post him out of protest.

You say "not bad at all", I see between 1-2 pitchers that have any chance at being decent, or even above replacement level. CC bounces back (a LOT), you've got 3 decent pitchers (but no ace).

 Just for fun, what are your projections for those 5, assuming Pineda actually pitches and you win Tanaka? Just real rough ERA and Innings Pitched. I don't see it working out...

A little more in line with reality. Certainly a far cry from him being a rotation-saver.

Pitched ONE year, at a 3.74 ERA. Misses Felix by about 1.5 runs per 9 ;)

Can't really argue there, at least in the short term. Good fielders, fast. Although, Ells' arm in CF is going to be a little adventure, and when he loses a step in a couple years, going to be fun. For now, though, looks good. Provided Soriano wasn't a fluke last year. Can he play RF? See him more as a LF guy, even though you'd much rather platoon him with Ichiro. Soriano would be a shit-show in RF at Fenway!

You keep almost being reasonable, and then throw out things like this ;) Where are you seeing those pieces? The pinstripes alone aren't worth an extra 15 wins a season, you know. Yankee Mystique is long gone, no one folds up shop when you come by anymore. Munez (if that's what sticks at 3B) sucks, Jeter has zero range at this point if he can get off the bench at all, Ryan hit about .200 with no power or speed. Tex only played 15 games last year, and had a down year the year before. McCann's been decent, although missed some time and been downa bit the last 2 years. Constant vision problems for some reason. The little league right field porch is probably going to give him a nice boost, though. 6 year deal there, though, could be fun.

So again, where's this world-beater, 'dethroning' team coming from? Couple ok pitchers and a decent outfield, good catcher and rest are question marks or coming back from repeated or lingering injuries.

There's optimism, and then just blind irrational fandom. Yankees are a mess right now, not really a way around that. And there's not a ton out there to really fix it, and nothing coming in the minors. Problem is, Yankees refuse to be seen as 'taking a step back', so they just keep throwing money at it to try and fix it. Been doing it consistently since like 2002, and kicking the can down the road. We'll see what happens with ARod, but it just looks like it's catching up with them. Too many long term deals for huge money, and the player doesn't go away when the skills do. Been dodging that for a while, but starting to stack up fast...

Cano was the best thing the Yankees had going, by far. Only one left that really was a threat to hurt you. Now he's gone, and it's replacement-level at 2B, if that.

The Yankees need to worry about getting past the Rays and the Orioles before they can start talking about dethroning the Red Sox.

    OK, full disclosure.

I'm a homer. Born and bread Yankee fan.

I see on average 155 games a year, every inning.

I don't say numbers are bad. I can't quote them like some for sure, but who did I pick to win the AL East last year?

The Red Sox. (when everyone else had them at the bottom)

Here's what I saw last year from my Yankees. Injuries like no one I can remember. So we had for all intents and purposes a IIIA team out there for most of the year. What did we do? We won 85 games in the best division in baseball, with almost the same starters I list below with about 1 run less per game than previous years.

    So...

Agree, but still threw 211 innings. I expect him to come back at least as strong. But not an "ace" anymore.

Our ace last year for sure. Many many times he left the game with the lead and got nothing for it. Age yup, but only asking one more year.

2nd half of last year he seemed to mature. Effort less 95 mph and has gained much confidence. He could end up being the ace.

    I know, I'm dreamin here, but .... but .... :)

You know more than I do, but I'm hoping the Yankees go for this kid. And keep in mind, if they get him they won't lose a dime.

True. But we still have Phelps too. Again, I'm a hopeful guy.

Good point about Soriano, I was one that couldn't believe what he brought to the table last year. Pleasant surprise.

Don't be a hater. :) I think McCann's contract was a good one. Not too long and not too much. What I gather is he's money behind the plate and a great team guy.

What I see in Nunez is a kid that has improved his fielding every year and has a good stick. All-star, no; but hungry.

I am worried about Jeet's foot. But he will produce .300+ ba and that monster range thing isn't that big a deal. I know the numbers guys go bat shit when I say that, but he's not losing us games as long as his bat is normal.

We aren't done yet. We do have some trade bait. We still could get Chooooooooo, Garza?, Price?

    HAHA... this is fun.

True. But again, we won 85 game last year with bandaids and chewing gum.

I'm disappointed we didn't keep Granderson. I thought we would have gone for him, but is he worth more than 60 mill for more than 4 years at his age? Maybe this was a good let.

Cano? I'm glad the Yanks didn't go 10. Someone on TV said the Yankee infield AWAR (is it?) will be higher next year without Cano.

"Never really was a Yankee."

What, just because a player comes up through a team's system means he should stick around no matter what? He wanted an absurd contract that will ultimately hurt his team in the long term, and the Mariners were happy to give it to him, because Jack Z is a fucking moron.
