Do Klingons fart in the airlocks?

Soooo...long time lurker, first time poster. I felt compelled to ask this question here after it apparently was deemed too 'vulgar' for the Star Trek Answers wiki (which, as near as I can tell, is run by one guy who pretty much just regurgitates Memory Alpha content).

Anyway, here it is: I've seen multiple references online to a supposed 'existential' question that was posed in the Making of Star Trek novel - "Do Klingons fart in the airlocks?"

Supposedly, this question has had a long run as an inside gag in the Trekverse, but I am confused about its background and 'existential' nature. Can anyone help clarify?

Thanks!

It is from one of David Gerrold's two books about Star Trek (not a novel), he was supposedly describing Klingons in general and that was one of the things on the list.

The World of Star Trek?

:)

Yes, it's from The World of Star Trek.

To paraphrase (the book is packed away), "Klingons pick on little old ladies. Klingons fart in airlocks. Klingons do the things that men pretend they don't do, only Klingons are proud of it." Or words to that effect.

And to think I came in here with the expectation of posting an "In before the lock" picture, and I'm leaving on a mission to find a book...

It does make one wonder if Brent Spiner's one-off comment about Data being into the Dutch Oven technique could likewise be considered soft canon...

Anyone who does that to another person is an asshole. If you do it to yourself you're just stupid.

Well, if you fart in an airlock with other crewmembers present, you're essentially giving them a Dutch Oven, which is the point that David Gerrold was trying to make about the personalities of Klingons, or so it sounds.

Of all the ideas David Gerrold postulated in The World of Star Trek, why was *this* the only one never adopted for the format document of The Next Generation?

I have no idea. I personally find the image of Kang, Koloth, Kor, Gowron, and Martok having a fart-off in one of DS9's airlocks, Nutty Professor-style, hilarious.

I can totally imagine Worf trying to justify it to his Enterprise-D crewmates as it being the "mark of a True Warrior";and, further, going on to elaborate that this tradition has it's beginnings in a great farting contest between Kahless and his brother Morath, which continued on for twelve days and twelve nights...
