Yea. I think the list of shows that could translate to the west without massive changes if fairly small. Japan and Korea do run your lawyer/cop/doctor shows as well, but the US already has them in spades so there's not really much point in copying one. The CW could copy something like Bloody Monday from Japan to give them a 24-like show centered around a teenage hacker.

I think pretty much everything has a "-punk" these days. I guess biopunk is to bioengineering and genetics as cyberpunk was to computers.

I want to like Helix, but that trailer doesn't do anything for me.

 

Just as an aside, Helix was the name of the make-believe blockbuster film in Notting Hill that Julia Roberts' character starred in, that had a "psychopathic flesh-eating robot".

 

Judging from the trailer, the Notting Hill "Helix" is the one we really want to see.

Not conclusive of course, it is possible to make a crappy trailer for a decent movie/show. I'm sure you can think of lots of examples.

 

Me neither. I am so sick of that damn Luddite "We mustn't tamper with the laws of nature!" meme. Humans have been "tampering with nature" since the first time we domesticated a plant or cured a disease. I want science fiction that treats science as the solution, not the problem.

 

Also, why is anyone that was once involved with the X-Files obsessed with the black oil and the Antarctic?

 

As far as I can tell, only one member of the show's production staff, Steven Maeda, ever worked on The X-Files, as a story editor for two seasons. This is primarily Ron Moore's show.

Hourman Added to The CW's Superhero Roster

 

So not the pill popping Hourman who gets an hour of super strength?

 

The Rick Tyler Hourman does have that power, like his father the Golden Age Hourman, but he also has an hourglass that gives him visions of the future. I can see why that would be more TV-friendly than popping addictive pills to get superpowers.

 

Yes, more TV friendly, but I think taking the addictive substance Miraclo would make a better story. You don't have to reveal it's addictive right away, but slowly, until our hero realizes he is hooked.

 

^But showing a protagonist taking pills that give him power could fall under the category of "imitatable acts" and risk giving impressionable young viewers the wrong idea about what kind of behaviors they should emulate. At least, I can believe that the networks would fear that possibility. Sure, maybe you could get a rich and meaningful story about drug addiction out of it, but I'm not surprised that the CW would prefer to play it safe and avoid the issue.
