I think the real point to publishing a Defenders book now is to protect the trademark. Marvel trots it out every few years so that it doesn't expire. Same with Invaders. If the book is a success, great. If not, well, that wasn't the point of the exercise in the first place.

No doubt that's a factor.
Learned their lesson losing the rights to the name Champions.

I did like the art in the book though. I think I understand why they did what they did with Annabelle and Valkyrie but I was indifferent to Annabelle and others seem to have been turned off.
Bonding her with a mortal felt like a riff on Donald Blake/Thor.
The Valkyrie costume redesign is nice, I do hope TPTP keep that as she shows back up later in the MCU.

How do they make a Defenders series that doesn't suck?

If Avengers can sell 6 books, it can't be that difficult?

Call the book the Defending Avengers.

I prefer the classic Defenders: Dr. Strange, Hulk, Valkyrie, Nighthawk and a rotating fifth member.

I would doubt it. Marvel's protected the "Defenders" trademark for the next five years with Fearless Defenders. There's no compelling reason to launch another Defenders book for the next three or four years, not when that publishing slot can be filled with something like a new Avengers book, an Inhumans-family book, etc.

I assumed that Andromeda was an Alien for quite the longest time because no blurb backstoried her for ages as an Atlantean

That's over kill (triply so if Gargoyle was there.).

Kinda like when both Morph and Changeling were on the Exiles at the same time.

Marvel is rebranding everything again under the "All New Marvel Now" banner, just as they rebranded all or most of their books under Marvel Now as silly as it sounds, that is my guess as to what it is. They don't reboot or relaunch as DC does, but they seem to just rebrand with new number ones every few months lol.
