You know why it is, and it's a safe bet that's why you made it.

It was an unneeded swipe at Quinto that had nothing to do with the story or establishing anything about the character. It was a cheap shot aimed at the actor's sexuality; which in no way has been shown to affect either the way the character is written or his performance.

You lose your bet then. I actually forgot of Quinto's homosexuality when I threw in that term. I was more or less addressing the idea of Spock getting a girlfriend just to make it clear to viewers that there is not gonna be some Kirk/Spock bi-curiosity going around. Heck, IIRC, Quinto didn't even come out until well after the 2009 film was released.

It's amazing how many people have claimed this post-Abrams' Trek.

Are you suggesting that people making these claims haven't actually thought it up before Abrams Trek, but now do just as a way to show support for nuTrek? Totally absurd. In fact, I always thought that Kirk was an insubordinate horny dick that lied about his actions rather than owned them proudly.

It's amazing how many people didn't pick up on it prior to the 2009 film as it was pretty obvious in the early-1st season episodes.

I just never liked Nurse Chapel. Nothign against Majel, it was the way the character was written. She got on my nerves in TOS. Spock and her never made sense to me, seemed like she'd annoy the hell of out him.

If you read the books and the comics...yeah, that's pretty much what he was. The "captain Kirk fucking the alien chick fo the week" trope. Hell it was such a prevalent image of the character, that DC comics did a issue lamp-shading the concept when a young cadet on a training ship gets command after the death of the Captain and ends up nearly gets the crew killed and starts a war with the Romulans cause he was trying to be like Captain Kirk.

What Kirk is in the new movies is what the image of Kirk has been for years. Teenage Kirk from ST09 is pretty much drawn beat for beat from "Best Destiny" (a follow up to TUC and prequel to TOS at the same time). A book where, even with George Kirk around, Jim is a genius level repeat juvenile offender in and out of trouble with the law; making George desperate enough to call up Captain April to take Kirk on a ride-along mission aboard the Enterprise to try to straighten the boy out.

Killing Time: Another time travel story. In that book, Kirk is a genius level, repeat offender and drug abuser, ensign assigned to the ship Spock commands.

The reboots didn't make this personality out of vapor, it was always the image of who and what Kirk was.

Yep sure...yep...I'll buy that for a dollar.

Other than the scene where Uhura was teasing Spock in "The Man Trap", what else was it that made it "obvious" that there was a Spock/Uhura thing going on? It sounds more like a case of fans reading too much into something to validate the pairing in the 2009 film.

Either way, I don't care and neither did the writers of TOS seemed to think much of it.

The non-canon stuff never meant shit to me, so it's a shame IMO that the films are validating the caricature of Kirk in pop culture. That's all I have to say for that.

*sigh* Whatever, believe what you want I suppose.

Everyone who's spent much time in this forum knows about RedLetterMedia. I'm not a fan of the Plinkett shtick, personally, but I will grant that his review of the 2009 movie was actually pretty insightful.

I'm not convinced, however, that anyone needed to be disabused of the notion that "Kirk/Spock bi-curiosity" was likely to be turning up in these movies. Everyone who'd have been interested already knows there's fanfic for that.

The whole last half of DC's first run was great for hauling Kirk over the coals for his past decisions. I want RJ Blaise in the next movie.

That's it? Now I'm convinced fans are seeing things that aren't there, unless you have info on the writers actually acknowledging that they meant for a Spock/Uhura in TOS. With that, I would concede.

Neither am I, it was just a throwaway reference to an amusing theory by RLM that others jump at me thinking I meant harm.

Yeppers. Especially the Kirk and Spock parts. I have all of the DC runs in storage, need to invest in the DVD version of the comics. Those were some great stories.

Edit to add: Playing around in Memory Beta, I think I found the comic I want them to base the next movie on.

The writers for TOS have no need whatsoever to make any such acknowledgement in order to validate what was portrayed in the Abrams films. The latter films are simply exploring something that is inspired by the brief moments of flirtation in TOS--because it's a different timeline and so any such deviation from the original is perfectly allowable. No one is obligated to like that artistic choice, but it requires no "approbation" from decades-past writers. That would be an absurdity.

I'm fine with doing something new in these films (more admirable than just dredging up old stuff like Khan), I just don't care for what they've been trying with Uhura.

Isn't there a very early episode where Uhura literally sings about her feelings for Spock in the rec room?

Or maybe that's what someone was talking about when they mentioned The Man Trap.. I'm sorry, I can't remember what episode it was!
