Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

^ The PTBs have said there's no time travel in the Once-verse, and the show also supports that.

They've also stated, as I've said, that Alice comes from a fictional Victorian England, which, in the universe they've set up, means it's an alternate world (just like the Enchanted Forest, Wonderland, Neverland, and 'Gothic/Noir World' (Whale/Frankenstein's home)).

 

A lot of these assertions would be better supported by a source. Is there a link anywhere saying TPTB specifically stated the Alice-verse England is of a different origin?

As for the absence of time travel in the Once-verse, well, technically it's true, considering all the characters merely jump from one realm to another, i.e., the Enchanted Forest to modern-day Storybrooke.

Th Red Queen was horrible, she had so much stuff in her face she couldn't even act.

I liked the show a lot better than OUAT has been. Tons of fun. Didn't feel like a TV show, and they should have stuck to the miniseries in the winter break idea. More so because the ratings were HORRIBLE!

There is no time travel on the show. The different realms have time move at different speeds.

 

I really wanted to like this, because I love OUAT, but I just didn't! I really didn't like any of the actors, except for Naveen Andrews as Jafar. I don't really like Alice, the Knave is irritating and the queen just didn't have anything much to her. Also, I'm not particularly invested in the story about Alice finding the love of her life. He was not very memorable or great either.

I think part of the problem is, and this is going to sound silly since we're talking about a series set in Wonderland, that it wasn't grounded in reality enough. What worked so well with OUAT is that we start with Emma in the "real world," totally unbelieving, and follow her on this journey to magical craziness. Taking the ride along with her allows us to suspend our belief more and more each week as well.

Unfortunately this new series didn't start that way. We're just sort of thrown into the chaos of Wonderland and are supposed to accept it all no problem. But I'm not accepting it. It just feels fake.

I always try to give shows at least three episodes to prove themselves, so I'll stick with it for a couple of weeks to see if things improve.

 

I milldly enjoy Once Upon a Time, but I did not care for Wonderland. The characters, and the actors playing them, were just not good. The Red Queen was particularly horrible; is she stuck in perpetual duckface mode?

At least in Once Upon a Time you have like 20 characters running around, while this one basically stars 2-3 people...

The only good things are Lithgow voicing the rabbit, and Sayid as Jaffar (though he didn't make a very good showing here).

Given that it's pilot only got a 1.7 in the demo, this show will probably be swiftly cancelled anyway.

 

^ ABC has nothing to lose by airing the episodes they've already ordered, and they've got options available to them when it comes to trying to bolster the show's ratings.

 

I liked it, it was fun. I never saw OUAT but a commercial made me want to check this out.

So I've noticed the Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Robin Hood references. Any more stories amalgamated in this show?

 

The original show has had several worlds including The Little Mermaid, Frankenstein, Neverland, Wonderland. Everyone s waiting for the Star Wars realm to come into play.

 

Neat, it's like my childhood movies got together and made a TV show (kind of like Avengers, Expendables, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Is OUAT worth going back to watch?

 

Yah if you have time, which you should once Wonderland is canceled. The first season is fun, they follow the book of fairy tales. Season 2 is when they expand on it and go "Tat wasn't in my book".

Season 1 takes place in Maine and Fairy Tale Land of past, with hints of Wonderland. Then season two has Frankenstein and More Wonderland and that leads into Neverland where season 3 is taking place.

And the characters aren't as you think they are, it's an awesome retelling. Petter Pan is evil, it's great fun.

 

I wish you didn't drop that Peter Pan spoiler. I want to ask how can a guy like Peter be evil but don't tell me.

 

Ever been to Fantasyland at a Disney theme park? Its like that, all they fairytales live in the same Enchanted Forest. Only without the crowds and rides.

Not sure how OUAT will explain it, but the book in my signature has a few ideas.

 

It's okay, we don't really know much about Pan either right now. He is a new character this season.

I would definitely suggest watching OUAT. It's one of my favorite shows on TV. It benefits from having a great cast with a lot of chemistry together.

 

All we know about Peter Pan is that he is evil, that's it. It's not at all a spoiler being anytime they mention, or not, his name everyone was fearful of him. It's not like "King Kong dies!" or Darth Vador is Luke's dad!

 

I am not sure about Wonderland. I watched it last night and it did not really grab me. I was not engaged by any of the characters. The only one I remotely liked was the Knave.

I wonder if they will explain why the Hatter and the Knave were sucked into Storybrook? Were they both in the Enchanted Forest when the curse hit or is it due to Regina hauling along the people she wanted to take?

 

Great love story... blah blah blah... yawn.

None of that matters to me, but I am interested in the backstory.

We meet Jafar and Agrabah is mentioned. We see Jafar fly off on a carpet, but to where? Is Agrabah a part of Wonderland, or it's own world? I would guess a separate world. The pull out at the end of the episode would seem to imply that the genie (Cyrus) is being held by Jafar in Wonderland. Or was it the Cave of Wonders? Could the Cave have a portal?

Also Jafar has Cyrus captive, but is still searching for his wishes? My guess is when Alice freed him from the lamp, but didn't actually set him free. He gave her three wishes, which she never used since we see the three red gems in her boot heel. Maybe the genie cannot grant any further wishes until the ones Alice has are used.

And does Agrabah also mean that Aladdin and Jasmine will be along shortly?

 

Agrabah is a sub-kingdom of the Enchanted Forest. This was established in OUaT Season 1 with Giancarlo Esposito's Genie/Magic Mirror.

 

Ah thanks. Season 1 is a blur to me.

 

Finally saw the first ep, and was surprised how incredibly flat and unengaging it was. I admit I've never particularly cared for the Alice in Wonderland story... but then I could have said the same thing about most of the fairy tales in the Once Upon a Time, and yet that show managed to make the idea seem really cool and fun.

I think the biggest problem was introducing everything in a flashback, and skipping around so much in time. Even if we all know the basic story, we still needed to see everything introduced in a more gradual way, so we as an audience could actually have time to get emotionally involved in it.
