Missed that, my bad. Lost In Space. Not great, but it has some good moments of you've seen the series. Some others I may have missed: Starship Troopers Equilibrium (not seen, my son swears by it) Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow (different) V for Vendetta Watchmen
In terms of classics:Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Andromeda Strain, the Day the Earth Stood Still [new and original classic verion] BTW, Leslie Nielsen plays the commander in the film Forbidden Planet. I dunno about anyone else but it's interresting to see him play a serious role when I' m so accustomed to see him in a comedy.
Man, that's a good question, but I guess you can toss it on the technicality that it's not "fiction." I keep asking myself the same question about the upcoming Gravity. Movies about car wrecks aren't science fiction.

Well, there's a lot of SciFi movies people call train wrecks, so maybe movies about car wrecks do qualify Galaxy Quest has been mentioned, but, no mention of Mars Attacks, which I think is fantastic ("They Blew Up Congress" ). Has any one mentioned Independence Day? I liked it quite a bit. A lot of people hate it, but, I like Wing Commander And speaking of Forbidden Planet, it's a shame the JMS Scipt for a modern remake never went anywhere, I was really looking forward to it.
Have we mentioned The Andromeda Strain yet? The original, not the TV remake. And, of course, the 1960 George Pal version of The Time Machine. And Time After Time for that matter, from the director of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country.
I'd think that Forbidden Planet is itching for a remake. It's suprising that the project hasn't gotten more traction.
I'm still amazed nobody has remade Fantastic Voyage, which seems to cry for a brand-new version with state-of-the-art SFX . . . and 3D. (You'd have to ditch the Cold War angle, but that's certainly doable.)
They technically re-did it under the new name, Inner Space starring Dennis Quaid, albiet the story was slightly different than the orignal. But yes - with modern effets it could be an amazing film. As an aside, I dunno about you but I'm growing tried of 3-D? For example I just got the Blue Ray Trek film in the mail and originally saw the film in May in 3-D. I much more enjoyed the film in 2-D v. 3-D because it was less distracting and made it easier to focus on the dialouge. IMO - James Cameron and Avatar was the only great 3-D film and to a lesser degree the Great and Powerful OZ.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) has been mentioned twice already, but it's worth pointing out that the first remake (from 1978) is also a very good sf movie. Along the same lines, the remake of The Fly (1986) may be better than the original (1958), although both are worth seeing.

Here are some movies that I don't think have been brought up yet, Sphere - Its is a decent sci-fi horror movie about a spaceship crashed in the ocean. They Live! - This is an entertaining movie about a guy who discovers that aliens are controlling humans on earth. Armageddon - Ok, its a Michael bay movie, and I can't say that its great, but I enjoy it. I thought it was a decent space adventure. The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - I never read the book, but this was pretty good. Not as good as the 80's BBC mini series, but still pretty good. Stargate - While this is not very good compared to the excellent TV show that came from it, taken on its own this is a decent movie. Besides that, the other stuff I'd reccomend has already been mentioned. These are just a few things I didn't see mentioned, and think are worth a watch.
Well don't forget Armageddon had Deep Impact as a rival as did Mission to Mars with Red Planet. I preferred the Deep Impact and Mission to Mars, to their competetor films. Not that the others were bad films.
