Also the more I've been reading on these board the more I discover that people didn't feel the same way about New Earth/Challenger as I do. Back then Diane Carey was my favorite Trek author and I've found it strange that people don't really care for her. Though I've got Ship of the Line in Hardcover and the Voyager Captain's Table sitting on my bookshelf unread that people usually bring up when discussing her, perhaps I should crack on of those open and see what the fuss is about. Anyways sorry about the potential derail of the thread, back on topic I've also read the first Vanguard and ordered the second, it seems like it's going to be a fun series to read, and if it is only 8 books because they had a story to tell and didn't want to drag it out I respect that. I was happy during Season 3 or 4 of LOST when they said that they were only doing 6 seasons because dragging out the story for the sake of dragging it out is never a good thing.

The problem there is that they were already dragging it out for the sake of dragging it out before the first season even ended. There was a point when you could tell that the show's success had sunk in and the network had told them to stretch out their story arcs to fit the longer run the show was now expected to have -- because up to that point, the characters had been growing and evolving, but suddenly they just started backsliding and going into holding patterns. Sometime early in the second season, I just lost interest and stopped watching.
Just like with Smallville. Really, once Jonathan Kent died, none of the characters really grew, especially Clark: he just seemed to stay still from early-Season 5 till the producers finally decided it was time for the cape and tights in Season 10.
Voted SCE. I really think that it would be interesting to do more with them.. or at LEAST catch up with them. I'm love to see a SCE presence in The Fall, even.
I voted S.C.E., but I'd also welcome Challenger. Diane Carey's best work, I'd say. I miss Shucorion. 
We did see of the SCE and IKS Gorkon characters in A Singular Destiny .
We really could see more of them in current titles - the SCE could be fitted into the Typhon Pact novels easily and so could the New Frontier cast and the Klingons.
We are getting a Vanguard follow up in Seekers, and I hope that will have some TMP content occasionally. Stargazer is a bit isolated timewise, but as DS9 showed, the MU could still show up !

The story of the Typhon Pact is not a specific series or storyline, just the current astropolitical status quo. They've already featured in several novels that didn't have a specific Typhon Pact banner, including A Singular Destiny and Books 1-2 of Cold Equations. Think of it like the Section 31 miniseries -- just because there was a specific run of books by that title, that didn't keep Section 31 from appearing in other books. And the Dominion War was featured in books that didn't have The Dominion War in the title.
I hope we do get to see more of them.
I understand. The Typhon Pact continues to play a role but I wonder whether series title Typhon Pact may be reused.
Also a solid choice. I know opinions of Carey are all over the place, but I really thought that series had potential. Oh well.
Same here, although I found the resolution to the cliffhanger from the novel in the final book to be a bit off-putting.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who wanted more Challenger. It certainly felt that way for the longest time.
Yes, Shucorion was brilliant. And I really, really liked Keller.
Of the major series that have ended or are on "permanent hiatus," I do probably miss Vanguard most, but Challenger will always be the thing I would want more of.
On another note, I'm kind of surprised no one seems to miss Stargazer at all... my personal opinion of MJF's so-called writing aside.
But even more than any of the novels, what I really miss are the two best Trek comics from the late 90s Marvel era: The Early Voyages and Starfleet Academy.
Can we please, bloody please, get Dan Abnett to write a Pike novel?

Any particular reason you picked Abnett, though, aside from just liking his writing? Has he expressed an interest in this or something?
Uhm, because he's already written Pike. While I'm a fan of his writing in general (especially his Guardians of the Galaxy and related work with Andy Lanning at Marvel), I make the suggestion mostly because co-authored the 17 issues of Marvel's Early Voyages comic, along with several issues of Star Trek Unlimited. Early Voyages is arguably the greatest Trek comic series ever published, and certainly the best of Marvel's output.
In fact, given his knowledge of Trek, and his rather prolific career as a sci-fi tie-in writer, I've always been rather surprised he hasn't done a Trek novel to date.
