Joséphine-Éléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn (1825–1860), Princesse de Broglie painted by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. This is without a doubt my favorite painting. I would go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and just stare at this for hours.

I don't know if I could pick a single favorite. I definitely have a special fondness for The Scream. In fact, we're buddies. Here he is visiting my backyard:

Also, almost anything by van Gogh; Wheatfield With Crows in particular. Norman Rockwell's The Problem We All Live With. Liberty Leads The People by Delacroix. American Gothic by Wood, of course. And I do like Nighthawks (I love how TCM turned it into a promo).

I missed that the first time around. The Hopper-promo's are brilliant though

Yeah, it's amazing. I'd love to see a full-length movie-- or at least a story of some kind-- animated like that in the style of a well-known artist.

In case of Hopper: A story of invisible dangers lurking just outside the cold buzzing light from the fluorescent tubes in a modern metropolis.
A story about one man and one woman that meet -in many places. But never connect.
All set to a soundtrack of the most bluesy jazz imaginable.

I would like to start off by posting an image of one of my favorite paintings of all times.

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper

It is a classic example of American art.

"Nighthawks" is excellent. It reminds me of my favorite scene in The Golden Compass, when Lyra runs away from Mrs. Coulter to a cafe, a creepy older guy buys her a sandwhich and tries to give her some booze, and she scares the crap out of him by telling him her father's a murderer. Hard to believe it was left out of the butchered movie adaptation...

I'm also a big fan of "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus". Who doesn't want to explore that island cave in the middle?!

I like Magritte, too. My family bought a print of one of his paintings when I was a kid---my parents still have it. I've always loved it; it reminds me of our California home, which everyone used to call "The Castle."

That's cropped slightly, but it's from a 1944 painting by Alexander Deineka (also transliterated as Aleksandr Deyneka) called "Expance".

I'm also quite partial to Matthias Grünewald's "The Temptation of St. Anthony" from the Isenheim altarpiece. A top-quality hallucination, that.
