The hate at "Genesis"

I've seen alot of hate for this episode around these boards. I don't get it - I've always considered it a scientifically flawed but fun romp in an otherwise dull final season for TNG (they deserved much better). Can you help me understand why by voting and commenting.

I love "Genesis".

Ok the science may be a little far-fetched, but this is on a series where they travel at faster-than-light velocity and utilise transports--it's meant to be fun and enjoyable to watch.

I don't love the episode, but I don't hate it. It scared the crap out of my seven year old self when it first aired. I couldn't watch it until many years later. So for that, it kind of does have a special place in my memory.

I love this episode. Like most Trek, the science behind it is a little silly but guess what? Trek is science FICTION.

As fiction, this ep is a lot of fun.

I like Genesis, don't care about the science in it.

I don't think that in any episode the concept of evolution has been used correctly. There is no path forwards or backwards, you cannot suddenly evolve or de-evolve.

I really don't. Though my thoughts on in may be colored by the fact I was pretty burnt out on TNG at that point (definitely a show kept on well past its "best by" date).

I am a Christian so I went with the creationist option.

But, that is not why I didn't like the episode. I've loved a lot of stories that dealt with evolution before. This episode just carried the wacky science too far and failed to impress me.

That's two stupid episodes by Braga involving dubious de-evolution.

Braga was always weak on science or even technobabble resembling science. He's at his best when he's writing episodes that screw with your head.

Makes some good points both on the bad science and the structuring of the episode.

The Barclay spider was a nice echo of Al (David) Hedison in "The Fly".

It's high concept fantasy, which doesn't fit everyone's conception of what Star Trek is (or should be), but I love it. It's certainly a terrific showcase for Michael Westmore's talents.

I'm in the same boat, I was 6 when I first saw it and was bloody terrified

If you can overlook the blatantly obvious science issues its a good way to kill 45 minutes.

Although they screwed with canon a couple of episodes earlier when they changed Spot into a female in preparation for the episode

Well, I always figured Spot was female because of those lines and the rest was just... miscasting.
