When [Spoiler] yelled "[Spoiler!]" was that suposed to be [Spoiler]?

Re: When

I didn't laugh, but I was thoroughly amused they used that line. :rommie:

In my opinion, I thought Quinto delivered the line very well, but because of its meme status, I think they should have avoided using it. However I don't think the general public really were affected, I know at least two people who were less familiar with Star Trek (at that time :techman:) found it emotionally moving.

Re: When

I have to say I have become disallusioned with the writers of the film, esp. Orci. His recent rant over at TrekMovie really makes me think less of him, as a writer and a person. Not graciously taking criticism (from whatever the source) is not a good trait, especially someone subject to public criticism.

Can you post a link to that? I can't find it and I'd like to read it.

I thought Lindelof, especially post-Prometheus, was the bigger problem.

Re: When

I like Spock, but I also like Abrams version of the character. A great "What If?" is "What if Spock snapped?" and we're getting to explore that angle in a way TOS and the movies never could.

But that keeps happening. We're two for two so far. It's as "creative" a plot device as near-destruction of the Enterprise, or Scotty telling Keenser to "Git down!". It worked in the first, so let's do it again.

I've been saying since 2009 that I want new Spock to be the villain of the third film. It's would be an interesting twist to watch the man descend into chaos and never make it back.

Then it's just another "Starfleet's best gone rogue" story. While it might have been a good idea, it was squandered with STiD. The only fresh way to have Spock be the villain is a mirror universe story -- and even that's not too fresh.

I see where you're coming from now. You're a deconstructionist. Superheroes no longer super. Humanize everything to death to make our own selves and ego better by comparison than the heroes of our predecessors and ancestors until things are so diluted they becomes meaningless, all external threats are neutralized in favor of the internal, and there is nothing left to hope for, there is no bar to reach up to, and no role models with which to better ourselves. I despise that fad.

:guffaw:

You are so freaking lost its unimaginable. It has nothing to do with deconstructing the character. Were they deconstructing the character when they showed an evil-version of Spock during Mirror, Mirror?

People complain that these writers never do anything new and when someone tosses out an idea that takes a character in a totally different direction, they're accused of wanting to tear the character down.

You people really need to make up your minds on what you actually want?

I specifically thought about that in anticipation while writing my post because someone else mentioned Mirror, Mirror. The answer is: no, they weren't.

Re: When

I didn't laugh because I knew it was comming (thanks spoilers), and I think its a stupid line going back to TWOK.

Re: When

I had no issues with it at all. I found it more effective than in the original, actually, as it fit with the overall character arc of Spock in the two films, whereas it was more of an isolated moment in TWOK.

My thoughts on the scream - during my downtime between my first and second viewings - was that Spock was actually sensing the approach of Khan. And the next scene does show Khan.

I was misremembering the timing of their mindtouch (which, of course, happens afterwards), but it still works for me that Spock can sense the approach of a strong, determined mind, much as he sensed the approach of V'ger... right in the middle of his Kolinahr graduation ceremony.

Re: When

The better character arc should have shown that Spock has learned to control his response, just as Kirk learned something. That way, we would have seen Spock "emotionally-compromised" in the same way as Prime Spock from the first film.

And yet many fans pilloried Robin Curtis for her unemotional delivery of "David is dead" in ST III, even though she'd been directed to say it that way by the director: Leonard Nimoy himself.

Any of these types of choices are hard for viewers to judge fairly, because opinions will be split. There will always be someone ready to call it a "missed opportunity", and that "B" should have been chosen over "A".

Re: When

Tangenting slightly, I've never seen Robin's delivery of that line as completely unemotional. Maybe I read into it, but I always felt she gives a slight choke as she says "is."

Re: When

This is another one of those complaints that completely baffles me. "Fans," usually through the confirmation bias of others, insinuate that nuTrek isn't "intelligent" or whatever and then turn around and complain when the film does do something esoteric and cerebral like Kirk's death scene. It's only funny to those who make it funny.

As far as Orci and his comments, the vitriol he's been the target of has gone well beyond criticism and become way more personal than it should. Frankly, I don't blame him for lashing out.

Re: When

The third film will probably have an "I am your father!" scene so Quinto can work up an impression of Mark Hamill.

I fully expected Kirk to say, "Oh my" (Generations) which, come to think of it, steals George Takei's bit.

Re: When

I wish they'd have incorporated the "never lose you" line from The Naked Time into the scene where Kirk is realigning the warp core.

Um, I think that's a stretch. As "better" as he may be, powerful-mind Khan isn't even on the radar compared to powerful-mind V'ger.

Re: When

My reaction to Spock's "KHAAAAAAN!" was to think that yep, SPock is totally going to kill this guy with his bare hands.

Also yeah those guys who were going on about how "Harrison" could take Spock were so going to eat their words.

Re: When

Quinto did not sell the scream for me. It's not that Spock did the scream that was bad, it was that it felt like Quinto didn't throw himself into it completely

I liked the idea but you are right that Quinto didn't do everything he could to sell it. I wonder how many takes they did and what the other takes look like? This one could be on either Quinto or Abrams.
