Wouldn't surprise me if a 2-disc Ultimate Special Collector's Edition comes out some time later... they love doing that sort of thing.

Find another Paramount release that includes retailer exclusive features in a re-release package.

Not quite accurate. The TrekCore review (which I'm laboring over currently) will break down who has what, and what you actually "need" to buy to get everything.

If not, I'll find the special features that my version lacks.

But if they're going down this road and splitting the special feature among that many different releases, I can't believe there won't be another down the road.

Trekkies love to double-dip and Paramount knows it.

Other than not buying the discs, is there any way to complain about this?

Does J.J. have any say over the poor presentation of his film on the home video market?

    Is he aware of this?

    Check this out.

This guy M. David Melvin (the producer of the VAM on the discs) says this situation was not all Paramount's doing....

Remember, this is the same studio who had the balls to charge fans $100 for the VHS release of STV:TFF.

Why complain? It's been that way for years now for pretty much every movie.

Suggesting that it is probably Bad Robot's doing. Which would tie in with that report that BR was disappointed that they weren't allowed to exploit Star Trek merchandising as much as they wanted to.

I have absolutely no intention of buying this film until they release a complete version of the disc. I'm NOT paying twice, no matter how hard they try to make me. I'm sure a complete version will be out in a year or so. Will be interesting to see how the sales go for this with what we know.

Wow. You really think this is tied into BR's plan to re-brand all of Trek with the 2009 film? What fuels your speculation?

I would call that "adding insult to injury".

Or this is Abrams' parting FU to CBS/Paramount over the merchandising brouhaha by sabotaging the home video release. "Yeah, let's see you make money off me now." And judging by the growing outrage, I'd say it's working.

It's quite possible that they did charge that much for the VHS release. But it also wasn't unusual. I used to work the video stores during the heyday of VHS, and most videos were not sold to customers, they were sold to video rental stores. Of course, the studios had to have a price in case an indivisual did want to buy a video, (because it wasn't illegal for a customer to have a chance to buy it) but it was always prohibitively expensive that no one would actually do it, but the studios could say it was available. Their target was the video stores, and the stores would be able to get the tapes in larger quantiitues at almost no cost, but they'd have to return commisions on every rental for quite a long time. I knew about this because our store was small and my boss, who owned the store, didn't go that route and would have to pay the customer price for VHS's.. his benefit was that he didn't have to send these companies any money back for rentals.

Remember all of this was before WalMart became an easy place to buy movies cheap.
So yes, Paramount probably did have a hefty tag for that movie, but you have to have some historical context.

I just cancelled by preorder too. The movie was good, but definitely not worth $80 for a release they've thrown together as a means of ripping off fans. I may pick up the phaser separately (it's been available for years, so it's easily available on ebay) and if I want to watch the film I'll get it through other means, unless they release an edition with the complete set of features.

The situation with the extras is quite disappointing, but I'm surprised it riled up enough people to see demands for boycotts. For me, the real clincher would be if they skimped on the visuals and audio, which is the reason I buy blu-rays in the first place.

How else would you watch the movie if not buying it on home video?

Agreed. I've got the blu-ray / DVD combo pack on preorder, and I might just cancel and pick up the DVD version--if that. I've got the I-tunes version, not sure if it's worth the extra money for a hardcopy if there's nothing extra to be gained.
