Love this episode but it pisses me off! So the Skrreeas make it through the wormhole and need a home and believe that their long lost plant of eden is Bajor. They ask to relocated in a part of Bajor that needs farming, the Skrreeas are farmers and the land needs to be healed but the Bajorians don't want to risk the Skrreeans getting hurt from Cardassian poisoned land. So the immigration is rejected. Doesn't this seem so what short sided? Bajor had been raped by the occupation is in the middle of a famine and they could really use the help! The Skrreeas need a home and they are farmers! Bajor rejected something that would have helped speed their recovery and diversify their culture all because they didn't want to take a chance and to add insult to injury Kira adds that she doesn't believe that Bajor is their long lost planet of Kentanna. I find it disturbing that such a spiritual and religious people could so quickly reject another people's religious belief! It seems like the Bajorians are as hypocritical as everyone else! Your thoughts?
It does seem a little short-sighted, given the state of the land and the condition Bajor is left in. But then again they have just spent decades under oppression which would leave them a little wary of other races (the Circle movement is a prime example of their subconcious xenophobia). Had the Skrreea come through the wormhole a year or two later I think Bajor would have accepted them.
I agree, it was too soon for the Bajorans. Also, another perfectly suitable planet was found. The Skrreeans didn't even consider it until they were forced to. Now that did annoy me!
Not surprised at all that the Bajorans rejected teh Skrreea. It would have been a massive influx, 3 million overnight more or less. I think the Bajorans made the sensible decision. In the short term there is how do they support such a large new population. The Skrreea claim to be farmers, but how would they cope with the Bajoran conditions and even if they do how long will it take them to be self sufficient not to mention and what happens if they're doing well and the rest of Bajor is not? You have an easy divide for civil strife, they are new, Bajor for Bajorans, Bajorans come first, etc. There is also the issue of support in terms of homes, infrastructure, power, waste, health care, and all that. Again we talking about millions of people here, not a few hundred or a couple of thousand. Last and not least is social, how will the Skrreeans and Bajoran be able to handle interacting in such close quarters? There could be a massive culture clash between the two and sharing a planet might be too much for both of them.
It cracks me up how we can have heated debates over cultures and people that techniclly don't exisit! I love Sci-Fi!
They should have had Michael York as the Bajoran official who turns the Skrreeans down. "There is no sanctuary."
Have to agree, hasn't that led to a lot of bloodshed and conflict in real life? Anyways, moving on. Bajor didn't reject them due to their religious beliefs but rather the state of their planet, lack of infrastructure, and humanitarian grounds--they would feel responsible for the Skrreea, just as they would their own people.
