Star Trek: The Seekers

I liked the fact that name SF writers were taking on Trek novels, back then.... but honestly.... reading 'em today... they just weren't that good. Probably my fave of that era is "The Galactic Whirlpool", but since it was Gerrold he already had a leg up on what makes good Trek.

Planet of Judgment was pretty strong too. It's clear that Joe Haldeman knew his Trek, or at least researched it well, but he also brought his own sensibilities to it in an interesting way, particularly using his military experience to flesh out landing party procedures.

BTW, if anyone wants to see the covers that inspired this... and my "Blish: Remastered" book covers, you can catch 'em here:

Awesome work! Thanks for sharing it with us. I've been loving your faux Blish covers since they were pointed out to me a year or so ago. I also love the faux Bantam '70's "novel that never was" cover by Silverberg. Did you ever do the other titles in that series -- by Phil Dick, etc.?

A group of us did some 'speculative' covers for Trek adaptations of known sci-fi stories; in this thread in Fan Art, I did Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, as well as Fahrenheit 451 and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Congrats, MrArcas! You're the reason I'll be buying any Star Trek books next year ;).

This series sounds awesome! I am *so* in! :techman:

Khatami's journey through the course of Vanguard was great to watch, so I'm looking forward to seeing it continue. And it's always fun to see the crew of the Sagittarius in action!

Can't wait for this to come out...

Wowza. This is awesome news. I really do need to catch up on Vanguard. I reread them all when Precipice came out, but I got burned out on Declassified. But I did really like the Sagittarius and Endeavor crews.

Yeah, this is really exciting! I can't wait to see what more you make of the setting, characters and aesthetics - especially as you go into the TMP era.

This is a good point - we have all probably assumed with Vanguard that everything looks like TOS, but we know that Enterprise looked almost identical under Pike - that is an old ship and an old 'look'.

Newer tech has probably been moving towards TMP designs for some time. Who is to say the interior of the Sagittarius is a smaller version of TOS ship interior ?

I do!

In all seriousness (ha!) think Sagittarius is grungy and a bit nasty, like a cheap motel that hasn't been updated since 1972. Avocado and burnt orange; shag carpeting and wood paneling!

I think you just talked yourself out of the Archer-class interior-remodeling contract. :mallory:

Bah! I'm just getting started! Turtlenecks, double-knit flared trousers, and big fat belts. You'll think you're on Moonbase Alpha.

This is amazing news! I came to Vanguard late and, at this point, have only read the first 3 books. When I heard the series was ending at book #8, I decided I'd take my time with the last bunch of books. Now learning that the Endeavour & Sagitarius would continue into this new series, it totally lit a fire under my ass to finish the Vanguard books faster. I'm loving getting back into it.

I'm a big fan of consistency in the various lit series. It's one of the reasons that i'm not attracted to many of the TOS 5YM books, and why I've only dug a few of the Titan books. Too many different writers makes it feel inconsistent for me. Now, with Voyager and Enterprise being "one writer series" for the forseeable future, and also Seekers (three writers, but all working together in a way), it looks like we'll be getting some great stuff from the 22nd, 23rd, & 24th centuries. Thanks for sharing the news :techman:

^I'm the opposite there, I kind of wish more of the series would go back to being multiauthor. I really like the diversity of styles you can get in a multiauthor series. Not that I don't enjoy single author series too, KMFB and DRGIII have been kicking literary ass with DS9 and VGR.

Looking forward to this! Looks awesome!

Thankfully I have time to get caught up on Vanguard first.
