If films are in the possession of the BFI under condition of first screening then the BBC would have to wait...

Even if we assume for a moment this is the case and the plan is to release all the completed stories that these 90 episodes now make on DVD in November, that will ultimately prove a bad idea for the BBC. Not everyone has the money to shell out for that many new DVDs at one time. The smartest thing would be to hold off any DVD releases until 2014 anyway, and release one or two of them a month, just like they have been doing with the classic era stories all along. After all, with all the available complete stories nearly entirely released, this will be the perfect way to have the line last longer without resorting to more double-dip special editions.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'm actually more excited by the possibility of this recovery than the actual anniversary episode! And, I'm plenty excited about that too!

Re: Wormhole "resorting to double-dip special editions", I'm sure that's something they love to do, not something they avoid. It's extra revenue for them.

Best I can figure, there may be some legal hold up as to the ownership of the film prints. Just because they arrive in Liverpool in 2011 doesn't mean the BBC has gotten a look at them that early.

From Vanezis @ http://missingepisodes.proboards.com/user/15/recent on May 17: "I can't think of anything more reckless than reporting as imminent a rumour of the recovery of lost material which is not yet secure. If the film did by some miracle exist and I was the person hanging onto it, I'd most likely turn my back on the whole thing and just walk away. As has been pointed out by others, this selfishness does harm and no good, and I speak with years of personal experience of dealing with film collectors and archives."

My point is, it doesn't take a marketing genius to realize there's more demand for a new DVD release than there is for something already released, especially where you're talking about a release no one in fandom has seen since the 1960s if ever. Therefore, it makes more sense to portion those releases out as long as you can rather than release them all in one month. After all, the line is healthier with more new material over the horizon waiting for a release than it is with just special editions.

I'm not trying to slam the special editions, I've been buying quite a few myself or stories I don't already own and therefore understand their place in the order of things.

Oh, absolutely, I didn't even expect it would be as many as 1 every month. I was actually aiming more at they might surprise us with a Special airing on BBC of 1 serial for the Anniversary Weekend (Maybe one near the front of the line for DVD release, that's cleaned up, but, not yet set to burn with the extras and so forth)

I guess I got distracted and didn't take my post that far :alienblush:

Gallifrey Base is parsing this for wiggle-room, but it seems pretty definitive to me.

    Alas.

Yeah, that seems pretty definitive. Oh, well. It's my own fault for giving my hopes up for this to be true.

    <sarcasm> Oh, well, there's a shocker </sarcasm>

I wonder how Levine will try to salvage any face from this...

So, for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary, what we have is half a normal season, Matt Smith leaving, a 60-minute long special and our hopes of ever seeing lost episodes brutally crushed by the steel boots of harsh reality? Happy anniversary, everyone!

Nuts. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case, but...oh well.

Plus a huge number of special audios, the DVD range completed (with all Pertwee stories in color), a classic story in HD, e-books with all the Doctors, and a 90-minute serial about the very beginnings of the show. That's a pretty nice celebration.

To elaborate further, Big Finish and AudioGo is in the process of releasing an 11-part series called Destiny of the Doctor which features one story of each Doctor as told through two actors, usually one companion and a guest star.

Additionally, and this is what I'm most excited about for the entire anniversary, Big Finish will be releasing The Light at the End, which features Tom Baker through Paul McGann with one companion each with additional companion cameos, all facing off against Geoffrey Beevers as The Master.

Edit: Also, we have animated episodes of The Reign of Terror (already released), The Ice Warriors, The Tenth Planet, and The Moonbase. That's pretty damn significant in itself.

That's like telling a kid that he won't have a gift for Christmas, but that you'll be giving the walls of his room a fresh coat of paint instead. It's hardly exciting.

I don't buy audios or e-books, or HD anything, so the only thing in your list that is of any interest to me is the drama about the beginnings of the show.

There has been so much confusion, misdirection and rumour about all of this I refuse to believe or disbelieve anything. I can hope, but I'll just wait and see...

I'm sorry you're not interested in the extras and the celebratory stuff that's coming out, but it is exciting to many of us. If you haven't heard any audios, you might give the 50th anniversary audio release a chance.

And even without that, as Emh just pointed out, we're getting The Tenth Planet, The Ice Warriors, and The Moonbase released with animated episodes, we got The Reign of Terror earlier this year, and all the Pertwee episodes have been restored to color.

Dang, that's pretty definitive! Drat! Despite my best efforts not to, I ended up getting my hopes up.

Have to agree. The BBC aren't even making the audios so they get no credit for that. The DVD line being complete around now has nothing to do with the anniversary, nor do the animations.

But, I'll enjoy what we do get. The special should be great and I'm really interested about the beginnings special.

Ian Levine's response to the Morris statement:
The fact that he's flipped on this rumor twice in the course of the week, and been so over-the-top vehement in holding each position, is pretty much the best case study in The Problem of Ian Levine that you could ask for.
