Anyone know why Japan has to wait so long? Did ST09 take that long?

Star Trek was released in late May in Japan. I don't know why the wait is so much longer this time.
Pacific Rim is being released in August in Japan, too. It'll be released there two weeks before STiD.
Maybe around that time it will return to IMAX back in the USA and they're gonna have another premiere in Japan to have some media talking about it?

Full house here for a 1:45 pm showing - pretty lively crowd (laughing in the right places) w/applause at the end. Going to the movies obviously was a Father's Day activity. One family commented going outside: Dad saying that it was second after the Dark Knight Rises but Mom like STiD better, then gave him a hug thanking him for a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Awww...
That settles it. I'm going for a fifth time, probably this week. It's nearly out of theatres (here in Australia). I might catch it in an afternoon session.
Yep. Abrams et al were the perfect choice. People can say what they want, but I believe they kept the essence of TOS intact. Nolan and Snyder for "Man of Steel"? Not so much. In my opinion, they turned Superman into Batman. Or it's as if someone had The Beatles do an album in the Rolling Stones style rock. (A friend always said Superman and Batman were the Beatles and Rolling Stones of comics.)
The campaigns mean a lot because the first weekends's take means so much, now. Get a lot early. To that end, MOS has just apparently set a June opening weekend record ($120 to $130 million). But everything considered now that it's out there, warts and all, it will be interesting to see what legs it has.
Meanwhile, STID just keeps chugging along.
Man of Steel is scheduled for release in Japan in late August. Maybe August is one of the stronger months there and studios think it's worth the delay.

Right, so STID isn't in the billion dollar league, but it is still in the top three blockbusters this summer. Maybe not for long, once Man of Steel catches fire.
It should still finish in the top ten movies of the year, I should hope.

Yeah. Much like Star Trek and Star Wars are the Beatles and Rolling Stones of sci fi. You can like both, but not both equally.
That was to be expected. I said a while back in this thread that they would probably end up with similar domestic grosses despite F&F 6's bigger opening. The F&F franchise has always been extremely frontloaded domestically.
If the year-end chart for 2013 is similar to the last few years, STiD will likely be about #8 for the year domestically and about #14 worldwide.
I like Batman and Superman equally.
I like The Beatles and The Stones equally.
I like Star Trek and Star Wars equally.
It's really not too difficult.
Japan usually opens movies months after other countries. From what I understand, they want to see how well it does elsewhere first. If true, it's kinda weird.

Well, you probably can, but that means appreciating the stylistic differences that distinguish and define them. At least in my opinion, it's not playing to strength for a Superman movie to have a brooding and overly grave feel to it any more than I would want to hear a Beatles cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" or have Kirk's first officer be a character like a Wookiee.
I live in Toronto, my family decided to take my dad to see MOS while I wasn't shocked to find MOS was sold out I was shocked that STID was also sold out too. This was a large theater downtown so I guess we know where some of the MOS overspill is going haha!
I tend to agree. Having been a Kirkaholic for over 40 years, I was wary going into the '09 film. Very shocked, yet pleasantly surprised with the new direction; overall I am happy with how things turned out. I am pleased with my hundred buck contribution to the franchise at the cinema.
I don't need any Kirk. That said, I've enjoyed watching the both of them and expect to see one or two more.
