"Year of Hell" Question

Something crossed my mind after re-watching "Year of Hell" recently. After the Voyager crew became successful in shielding themselves from the Krenim's weapons and temporal incursions, she orders the crew to abandon ship. She must have shielded the escape pods from the temporal incursions or they wouldn't have existed if Voyager failed the attack later. The question is, what happened to that crew? If they were shielded as I assume they were, Janeway didn't go back for them because she didn't know about them.

That's a good question.

I wouldn't think they'd have the capability to give temporal shields to every escape pod, so it's possible Janeway just expected them to make their way toward home in whatever timeline they ended up in.

I paid $3 to watch "Year of Hell" on a Virgin flight last year, remembering it as the pinnacle of VOY... and found the first hour mostly tedious and trite. The ship's falling apart and the crew's forced to cozy up to each other, but we still only see and hear the regular characters, minus Chuckles and Tom? And then when Janeway ordered the pods launched, I turned it off in disgust.

Paris mentions the Titanic. Well, guess what, there were only two reasons to board lifeboats on the Titanic:

1) The ship was going down, and everyone aboard was about to die, and
2) A friendly rescue ship was contacted before the sinking concluded

... Neither of which were true for the remaining Voyager crew. Just... no. :scream:

Every temporal torpedo fired at Voyager was the same technology as a temporal shield.

Quite portable.

It's just a question of keeping the bugger powered up, and always staying under it's umbrella.

Voyager already had metaphasic shielding which protected them from the temporal incursions. That was the whole reason the Krenim time ship came after them. It was the chronoton torpedoes that they had to develop a defense for, which they did when Seven determined the exact modulation of the torpedo stuck in the hull. Neither Voyager nor the Krenim ever switched time lines until they were both destroyed and everything reset.

My biggest issue w/ year of hell (classic episode, great job) was that in the case the time ship was destroyed, time should have returned to when the ships temporal device was first activated, not the day before or whatever. Maybe the "temporal shockwave" carried time back a little further allowing for an alternate sequence of events.

Because the antagonist played Red on that 70s show, my roommate and I always have fun with this episode, saying "dumbass!" whenever he barks an order at his shipmates.

Way off.

We saw people dissolve on Voager's bridge.

TUVOK: Captain, the Krenim warship is in pursuit, but their weapons are not powered.
JANEWAY: They don't know what to do with us now that we're shielded against their torpedoes.
KIM: Captain, there's some kind of spatial distortion heading toward us. Sensor readings are erratic. I can't identify the phenomenon.
CHAKOTAY: What's the source?
KIM: Unknown, but it originated approximately twenty light years from our position. It looks like a shock wave in the fabric of space-time.
JANEWAY: Tom, get us out of here.
PARIS: We'll never outrun it, Captain.
JANEWAY: Maybe our new shields will help. All hands, brace for impact!
TUVOK: You were correct, Captain. The temporal shielding has protected us. The wave front has passed.
KIM: Captain.
CHAKOTAY: Report.
KIM: It's definitely a Krenim ship. Identical hull markings, same bio-spectral frequency, but it's half the size. Limited fire power.
JANEWAY: What happened to the warship?
PARIS: I'm not picking it up on long range sensors.
CHAKOTAY: It looks like this entire part of space has changed somehow. The last time I checked this region was filled with Krenim colonies and vessels. I just ran a scan and sensors show no colonies and just a handful of Krenim ships.
JANEWAY: Harry, transfer all your sensor data about that shock wave to the Astrometrics lab.
KIM: Yes, ma'am.
JANEWAY: Tell Seven of Nine to meet me there.
CHAKOTAY: Captain, Astrometrics took heavy damage a few days go. It's offline.
JANEWAY: Well, let's get it back online. It appears that the Krenim Imperium has vanished. Our troubles could be over and I'd like to find out why.

[Krenim Timeship - Bridge]

OBRIST: Something went wrong. The entire Krenim Imperium. It's reverted to a pre-warp state.
ANNORAX: Not possible. Our calculations were perfect.
OBRIST: I may have an explanation. There's an anomalous temporal reading twenty light years from here. It's coming from a vessel.
ANNORAX: What vessel?
OBRIST: Component zero four nine beta, a ship called Voyager.
ANNORAX: That ship was classified as an inert component. It shouldn't be generating a temporal field.
OBRIST: But it is, and it was enough to throw off our calculations.
ANNORAX: Take me to them.

"New" shields.

Google search says the word "metaphasic" is not used in the episode.

Metaphasic shields let you park inside suns.

By the time Voyager got into use, metaphasic shields were probably just called "shields".

We needed more Trek episodes where they found people from other timestreams and couldn't return them. We got Tom Riker but I think that was it. Stargate had a couple examples of this though one of them was androids.. but they kept them!!

Now this wouldn't work quite so well with Voyager because you'd have two of whoever on board but it would have been nice to see it happen on the other series, with the occasional storyline about other so and so. Even better if other so and so came from some crap hole timeline or from a much better timeline and thought this one was the crap hole.

OMG IMAGINE THAT! If someone AU actually thought this Roddenberry blessed timeline was a crap hole!

That's what the Department of Temporal Affairs did.

"Time Customs"

Again, just like getting a catering degree, this is how Kim could have gotten promoted to Lieutenant by taking a field in the ship that isn't staffed, and staffing it.

(He made Delaney Sister's from Stellar Cartography redundant, and then gave their jobs to Seven of Nine. It's no wonder the kid had so much trouble losing his space cherry.)

Although, considering Deadlock, which is spacey wacey, not timey whimey, the only "refugees" Kim would have to manage and herd and smack on the nose with a rolled up newspaper is himself Harold Kim and Naomi.

Imagine it: Kim in a nice jet black uniform. :)

Actually, if this thought had crossed Kim's mind in season 3... By the time the Krenim became an issue, he would have had the clout as a mission specialist to assume mission command and maybe even ship command off Captain Janeway whereafter she would have had to work under him.

When Chell took over the Mess, do you think he wore Neelix's old wardrobe he left behind as a "chef's costume"?

You'd really begin to reminisce how Neelix's furr didn't clash with his suitscompared to the new short order cook.

I imagine Starfleet Catering Corps, when it's rarely needed in only areas where replicators are unsuable, wears stark white uniforms.

Starfleet Catering Corp wears what that destroyer of finales wore in TATV.

Chell would look cute in anything, I would LOVE to see him in a tux. Maybe I should send a letter to JJ about Bolians..

Chell was the Professor from My Secret Identity.

That guy raised me for a while.

In a way that a Television set replaces an absent parent.

"Chef" was a civilian.

Like Phlox or Neelix were civilians wearing civies.

That doesn't make it right. "Chef" was a total fiction that some holoprogrammer put in there for feel goodness. He never existed. There wasn't one chef they all confided in, there was a roster of stalwart food mechanics who had jumped at the chance to see strange new worlds and instead had to make pecan pies for a bunch of whiny astronauts.

We needed more Trek episodes where they found people from other timestreams and couldn't return them.

It would of been great if a handful of the crew came back from the delta quadrant with twins. -"Hey Mom, I'm home, and I brought myself with me."

"Guess who's coming to dinner..." indeed!

I doubt escape pods have the resources to use temporal shielding given that, AFAIA, they don't even have the ability to generate standard shields.

Any poor saps that had temporal shielding active at the time Janeway rammed the timeship are probably stuck in the DQ for the rest of their lives.

I like to think that it isn't the timeship changing everything else, but rather that each time it uses its weapon it jumps to an alternate timeline.

If they had temporal shielding, then that crewmen, crewmens (that's not right) would not have transferred through to Voayger in the next universe... The Rules from Year of Hell did not create dopplegangers. There's one one of each person, but if you're in a temporal shield when the universe switches, to the new Voyagers coupled to a new causality stream, it would seem like the crew in escape Pods had never existed.

Wow.

Every universe we saw after Janeway invented temporal Shields was a universe where Voyager had never been built, and her crew had never been born (temporally assasinated sperm, and temporallying removed raw resources, mommy and daddy would still had sex at the same time but it's a different sperm and egg in play, and Voyager would have been made to the same specs but with different tritanium and plastic and linen and everything else on board the ship.)
