Trek films have performed better at the box office when there haven't been any new Trek shows on TV than when there have been.
Wow, really? Any indication as to why?
The below expected results do certainly match up with my experience of seeing the film. Barely anyone in the theatre, no sell outs on Friday as of 6pm. The audience I saw the movie with was dead. No claps, no cheers, no gasps. Certainly no word of mouth was leaving our theatre. Indeed, the procession of people leaving our theatre from the previous screening was something akin to the Batan Death March. People looked disappointed, bored. When someone waiting in the lobby asked them "How was Trek?" One guy just shrugged and said "Don't get your hopes up."
Again, I have no clue what the obsession with Del Toro is. He's not some bankable name actor, he's a character actor whose better days are well past him. He really hasn't done anything of note since the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean I guess your can call the borefest known as "Che" as an accomplishment, but he's far removed from the days of "The Usual Suspects" and "Traffic."
Yancy
Having a lot of new Trek on TV made the movies less of an event. Whether the same would apply to big budget Trek films with a cast that has never appeared on a Trek TV show could be a different story, though.Wow, really? Any indication as to why?
There hadn't been a movie in 7 years when 09 came out. But even this time, there hasn't been a movie in 4 years. I would have thought the hunger for new Trek would be at fever pitch

Four years since the last Bond before SKYFALL, and that didn't hurt the box office in the slightest, god knows why. Still can't believe the worship that PoS got.
And they're getting it in foreign markets. It's just the domestic numbers that are taking an unexpected dip.I'm sure Paramount was hoping for a similar effect for Trek.
Maybe we overestimated the demand for Trek? I thought 09 completely destroyed the stigma, and made Trek 'cool' again.
Actually I think the announcement of the new Star Wars films might, just might, have dimmed enthusiasm for this. Even before before JJ was announced to direct. Star Wars has been talked about more than Star Wars in the last 6 months. Star Trek's cooler younger brother returned from vacation.
