Robert Picardo -- Best Male Trek Actor Next to Stewart

I noticed that at one point today there were 55 people looking at the VOY forum which usually has about 12 people looking at it. I assumed it was a spam attack thingie but apparently it was fame!

I did try to write a spec script for a while (for TNG, not VOY), and thought I had Picard's speech pattern pretty close. But every time I'd start an idea, about a month or so later there'd be a preview for next week's show that had an element I was working on, and I'd have to start over. Finally gave up.

At first I thought you meant to type Picardo. But then I remembered that Beverly would never allow an EMH in her sickbay again.

That reminds me of a hilarious bit of trivia I once read. (You've probably heard it already, but I'm going to tell it anyway.) Apparently, during the filming of "Message in a Bottle", Andy Dick was chatting with Picardo, and he said, "So, Picardo... That's a lot like Picard. Do people ever give you a hard time about that?" Picardo replied, "Your name is Andy Dick, and you're making fun of my name?" And Andy Dick just started laughing.

Hah. Never heard that one before, nice! :)

I'm sort of surprised Andy didn't use a stage name. And think of the teasing he must have gotten in school.

Then again, true story, I knew a woman with the last name of Gobble, and she married a guy whose last name was Dick. All her girlfriends teased her about being J____ Gobble-Dick.

He probably had to turn it round to a comedy act to survive which would have helped shape his future.

A quick search shows me there are 100 people with the surname "Dick" in my country. I wouldn't be surprised if every year scores of people change it.

People can be mean with sassing people's names. I had a girlfriend in high school with the last name of Gay.. which she got teased endlessly about.

Hilarious? You're not kidding--that's terrific, and so Picardo!
 :guffaw:

Yeah, he's pretty great. Also, that whole scene where the Doctor tells the Mark II to stop breathing down his neck, and the Mark II says his breathing is just a simulation, to which the Doc replies, "So is my neck, stop it anyway" was written by Picardo.

I can't imagine anyone else could have played the EMH so brilliantly. God, what if Picardo had been cast as Neelix instead? I can't even wrap my head around that.

Picardo would have owned the role if he'd been cast as Neelix and would have ended up with lots of stories with that in mind, excellent stories I suspect.

When I first saw "Caretaker" with Jeff McCarthy's cameo as the human doctor, I twas sort of hoping he was going to be a regular as I always liked his work. Picardo was an excellent job of casting though, even if the EMH had been human.
