What in God's name is that monster that makes the NuEnterprise look like a shuttlecraft? If NuEnterprise is bigger than the Enterprise D, that thing is bigger than a D'Deridex-class Warbird. WTF?? When did Starfleet get the resources to push out ships of that massive size?

I would like to think the "size crisis" of the Enterprise is visually-resolved in this one. If we don't see the oversized shuttle bay, it was never there to begin with...

The zoom-in shot of Kirk standing in the bridge window shows the Enterprise is as huge as it was last time. As does the shot of Scotty dangling in the enourmous engineering complex in the first teaser.
I'd say Into Darkness gives a simple explanation for the ships being so much larger in the Abramsverse - a different guy running Starfleet. Starfleet Prime was ruled by Admiral Nogura, and AR SF is commanded by Admiral Alex Marcus.
Dug up and posted a few older images from the first Star Trek movie and embedded the latest trailer on the website.

All the other photos of the ship crashing at Alcatraz are of the Dreadnought. Why are you assuming its Enterprise? Both ships crash. Seems as if Dreadnoughts crash was more controlled, like the big D saucer landing in Generations. Enterprise is shown dropping like a stone, powerless and out of control. Without some kind of thruster control, the ship is a rock. They don't just glide like airplanes. She'd most likely drop straight down. So the nice slow-mo of the saucer cutting through a building horizontally must be Dreadnought.
Because I posted this several months before we ever knew about a Dreadnought.
I don't think the Alcatraz ship is the dreadnought. The thing that goes down in the bay looks too small' the engine pylons and configuration are off and, most importantly, the one that comes down has a solid saucer, like all other standard Starfleet ships. The dreadnaught seems to have one of those new Star Trek Online-style ring-like primary hulls with an open middle, based on one if those photos from the trailer (third column, row 8).

After years of seeing trek ships seeming to get smaller and smaller at merzo.net, I welcome larger ships.
After Narada, I imagine some scans of the tech and Spock primes warnings of Borg, etc Caused Starfleet to make ever larger ships.
I think Kelvin is perfect for a post NX-01 universe, where FJ/Jefferies ships followed a trek-verse with only Daedalus.
When I was growing up, Enterprise was the largest ship on screen. I won't be happy until I see one as long as a star destroyer or larger.

I must be missing what the purpose of having a star destroyer sized starship would be. Why do the starships need to be so big exactly?

Huh... So I guess the USS Vengeance (is that really its name?) IS the one coming down in the water. The slanted pylons are the give-away on that. I stand corrected from my earlier statement.

But do we know who was running Star Fleet at the time of the new movies (2258-9?) in the Prime U? We know that Admiral Comsol was in charge in 2254 (After The Cage when Talos IV was quarantined) and that Adm Nogura was in charge at the time of the Enterprise refit, but Adm Marcus could have held that post in between in both universes.

The old novel Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda McIntyre had Admiral Noguchi running Starfleet in 2264. I always thought Noguchi was meant to be Nogura (from TMP) - the novels were prone to some incomprehensible last-minute changes back then.
But of course the novels aren't canon. This one came up with the names of Kirk's parents used in STXI, but in the book, during the ceremony where Kirk is given command of the Enterprise, George Kirk is said to have vanished mysteriously on a mission years before - wheras in the movie Spock Prime says he was there.
So... I guess you're right. Marcus could have commanded Starfleet at the same time in the Primeline too.
