In Jewish tradition, a child is never named after a living relative. Dead ones are OK.

Sometimes a child is given his or her mother's maiden surname for a middle name. My nephew, for example, is Joshua Levin Penslar -- Levin being his mother's unmarried surname.

In the English speaking world, can you decide to spell your child's name with a different language's alphabet, a made up language's alphabet or even a code?

there was a kid in school with me whose full name was Stephen Liquid Jones. his family were crazy hippy types and he very much hated it.

"Liquid Jones" sounds like a cool name for a pimp.

I didn't have a middle name growing up and once I change my name back, I won't have a middle name again.

Back to names, I always liked the idea of middle names being an attribute wished on/for the child--but nothing tacky, like "Wealth" or "Money."
