Any person who can render Randal Graves speechless and stunned is a person of great gifts.

I just watched Jay and Silent Bob Go Down Under the other night. It was as excellent as any of Smith's other stage acts. But what surprised me was how different Mewes looks. I don't know if he lost a lot of weight or what, but he was hardly recognizable.

I think it's a combination of kicking his addictions during the last decade, getting in better shape and being in his early 40s now. I believe Mewes was born in 1971 so he's now middle aged.

It won't be too many more years before Jay will be telling Silent Bob stories about his fiber intake and first prostate exam.

Right now he's a poster boy for health compared to the shape he was in during the Dogma - JASB period. To call Jason a complete wreck would be treating his condition very kindly. If there was a prescription or illegal drug within reach he'd probably have put it into his body.

That's why he wasn't in Jersey Girl. Kevin wasn't going to let him back on-screen in one of his movies until he got himself cleaned up.

According to Wikipedia he was born in '74 and is 38. Which fits, because he was pretty young when he did Clerks, 20 in fact (if one does the math...though depending on when it was filmed, he was probably 19).

1974? I read from an incorrect source, then. Thanks.

Still, 38 or 39 is close enough to middle age to start making "High-Fiber Doobie Snacks" jokes. :)

The original Clerks began shooting in March of 1993, so yeah he might still have been just 19 when the cameras began rolling.

I thought e issue was hat Jason had an outstanding warrant fr drug possession, and couldn't travel to NJ where it was filming?

That is messed up. Especially since all this time I just figured Mewes was a pot smoker. I mean I knew Kevin talked about his substance abuse problem, but I guess I never put two and two together.

Yeah, I mean I knew it was worse than just pot, but I don't think I knew quite how bad it was.

Probably both now that you mention it. Jason's drug use had gotten to the point where it embarrassed Kevin and he didn't want his erratic presence on the set of any of his movies until he went into rehab and cleaned up his act. The warrant in question no doubt played a role, but based on what Kevin's said in recent years he wasn't about to put Jason in Jersey Girl as profoundly messed up and dysfunctional as he was at that time.

I think in one of the podcasts Jay said it really hit home when Kevin told him he didn't want Jay around his daughter anymore. That was when he got serious about getting and staying clean and sober.

Jason Mewes is a sweet, funny and friendly person. When he doesn't have half the coke in Colombia coursing through his veins and nervous system. Getting clean and putting his life in order were the best things that ever happened to him, even moreso than fame from being in Kevin's films.

Kevin's proud of and happy for the guy for what he's achieved and overcome and I don't blame him one bit. Recovery from chemical addiction has got to be rougher than a lot of us imagine, and Jay must have gone through his own private hell kicking his demons.

This thread has encouraged me to watch the askewniverse.

That's nice to hear. Start with Clerks, but just so you know: the way Kevin designed and wrote the Askewniverse, Mallrats (the second film) comes first in the continuity. The events in that movie take place a day or so before those in Clerks.

It's a long story that I wouldn't even begin to explain even if you wanted me to. Just watch the films and find out for yourself. Hope you like them.

And Jay & Silent Bob strike back takes place before Dogma. See if you can spot the detail showing that.

That's news to me. With the exception of Mallrats happening a day or so before Clerks Kevin and the guys have always said that the films take place in chronological procession. For instance, when Jay and Bob leave the diner to board the bus for Illinois in Chasing Amy it's to help set up the events in Dogma.

You'll have to tell us because I don't know.

For clarification's sake, this won't be a first time viewing. With the exception of Clerks II, I've seen them all many times. It's just been a while.
