I finished The Eugenics Wars a week or so ago, putting the rest of the anthology on my birthday wish list. Now I'm about halfway into Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi (I read Redshirts right after it came out last year, and I'm addicted to him now). Also working through some forgettable Regency romance novels when I'm in the mood - my brain candy.

The Eugenics Wars is a great trilogy of books. Were you aware the author is a poster on the BBS? Good guy. Anyways, those books might not be considered canonical but they sure as heck make the Eugenics Wars timeline of events make a little more sense so I'd recommend them to anybody.

I particularly liked the 1986 chapter that references the whales and Quark and all that. /fangirl
Agreed. I love how the books tie so many episodes and movies of together and do it in a believable manner. A lot of Trek novels can't do that very well.
My favorite of his is Last Man Standing, in case you haven't read that one...

My niece has taken an interest in Einstein, and astronomy. She's only 6, and now she thinks science is "stupid". I'm brushing up on my knowledge of physics in order to show her how awesome science really is.

Way to go, man. It's never too early to help introduce a small child to something like astronomy. One of the great blessings of my youth is that my parents encouraged a love of the stars, planets and universe and bought me a telescope and binoculars to observe the cosmos.
Science is awesome.
^^ My church-and-football family is just the opposite. They always mocked my interests in the world.
I bought an awesome booklet from the early 1900s recently. There are tons of highly entertaining experiments and little party tricks. I could translate a few for you if you like. There are quite a few things that might fascinate a 6 year old (and which she can learn to do herself to impress her friends!
) Btw, you can tell her from me that Einstein was horribly bad at mathematics and his wife had to make all calculations for him because she was way smarter than him.
It might stir an interest for women in science in her. There are lots of very interesting ones - some of their bios make a thrilling read.
