Well sad....word of mouth helped skyfall a lot. The thing is when it comes to commerical sucess, JJ Abrams is in safe hands.star wars will always be sucessful even if some of the films are said to be terrible.

star trek on the other hand needs the word of mouth to be possitive.if into darkness gets a lot of neatgive reviews then the film will bomb.

star trek is not as bullet proof as star wars when it comes to box office gross.

However I guarantee that JJ Abrams will not tolerate bad acting unlike Lucas.

One of the downfalls of episode 1-3 was the horrific acting, especially from hayden christensen.

If you compare trek vs wars films...the 09 movies comes in second to empire stike backs in term of the critical reception.

In all honesty I almost feel sorry for JJ Abrams. Star Wars 09 is one of the highest rated and one of the best reviewed sci fi films ever,it will be hard for him to top that from a critical point of veiw.

Yea know between producing the TV show Revolution which IIRC was picked up for season 2 by NBC, Trek, and now Wars - when does JJ find the time to even take a shit?

So he shat on our childhoods instead of raped them? Dammit, this is getting too confusing and complicated!

No, he both raped them and shat on them. And not necessarily in that order.

I really don't get all of the angst/anger over JJ Abrams and Trek and now that he will direct Wars. He has turned Trek back into a viable franchise and has brought in legions of new fans.

After the disaster of a film Nemesis that not only was a financial failure for Paramount but was barely watchable even to the most ardent of Trek fans [like myself] he's re-branded the Trek into something commercially successful and fun to watch for new fans and old.

By adding Wars to his directorial resume and potentially he'll be able to revive Wars as well - we as Sci Fans may have years of "space opera," that is popular for years.

Abrams with the likely commercial success of the upcoming Trek film as well as the excitement of Wars coming out also has additionally likely lofted himself into the same stature of James Cameron who has also proven to movie going audiences that sci-fi can be exciting and compelling as well.

We should all be rejoicing as fans of sci-fi that lots of new material will be coming out for years to come between Cameron and Abrams who know how to make great films.

Exactly. I don't understand the handwringing here. So some guy is working on more than one popuar scifi franchise?

Around these parts, we call that Tuesday . . . :)

    This is all rather amusing.

It's like the ugly girl who gets taken to the dance by the cool guy. The cool guy said there was no way he could take the cute girl to the dance - too much intimidation and not enough time.

Now we're at the prom and he's shown up with both. Who do you think is going to get the slow dances and who will be standing by the punch bowl?

“I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big ‘Star Trek’ fan growing up, so for me, working on ‘Star Trek’ didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege"

And you think he will have time to do both? All his energies will now be focused on Star Wars.

You're Trek nerds. You've tried to convince yourself that you're not Trek nerds by mocking other Trek nerds, but you are. Your presence here is proof of that fact.

And you just got dumped for the prettier girl.

Don't worry, we'll be standing there with you at the punch bowl when it's time for the slow dance (I think it will be John Williams tune).

After sleeping on it, this makes the most sense. But I fear it means it will be 2016 at least before we see STXII. And I keep getting older, and older, and older. Gotta take care of myself.

Who really wouldn't want to be J.J. Abrams right now?

I'd imagine Orci and Kurtzman will write STXII no matter who directs. Especially if STID ends in a cliffhanger. They must have at least a general idea of where the next movie goes after that. Then, let Ben Affleck direct. I mean, turns out he wasn't Spock, so this would be a nice consolation.

If you'd ever shown any understanding of how and why movies are produced prior to this, you might have some interesting analysis to offer rather than a lengthy, clumsy and embarrassingly poorly conceived simile. Contrary to the cliche, life is not high school - at least not for most of us.

It's going to be fun to watch Abrams run Star Trek and direct Star Wars. No disappointment here.

That post was dead-on target, and those taking umbrage are probably the same ones -- or descended from the same ones -- who got their panties in a bunch when Shatner did the 'get a life' sketch on SNL.

    No.

What is funny is watching some of the folks who don't like Abrams's movies trying to gin up some schadenfreude at his continued success. It don't work like that, kiddo - before you can congratulate yourselves, the target of your envy and resentment has to fail.

I love JJ Abrams' Star Trek and I'm very happy that he's involved in the next Star Wars movies.

Let's be clear, though: don't you dare touch my Farscape, Jeffrey Jacob! :scream:

    Yes.

(and if we all take up your by-now classic posting style, the entire board will turn into "IS ... IS NOT" lunacy.)

Abrams helped revive Star Trek as a profitable and popular film franchise after the flopocalypse that was Nemesis. He handled it with just enough skill and love to make it one of the most popular films of 2009 and the only Trek film to date that's won an Academy Award.

I'm giving J.J. the benefit of the doubt with Episode VII. Can he do any worse than Lucas trying to direct emotion out of the Sears window mannequin named Hayden Christensen? Let him have his shot. I'd rather it be J.J. than George at this stage in the Flanneled One's career trajectory.

Is all that happening before he revives Firefly and Galactica or after?
