UK commercial parodies JJ-Trek

Hilarious. This is the second UK spoof of JJ's Trek complete with the apple store look and lens flare. The first being the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special A Christmas Carol.

Its funny because we here in the States rag on JJ's film fashion choice of lens flares but you don't see many parodies about by US media.

Based on how many "the lens flares are barely noticeable" comments I see posted around here, my guess is that US media are oblivious to the lens flares or how silly they look.

You've not made it to the mainstream until you've been parioded.

And for an even better parody you get the actors to parody themselves, such as Shatner and Doohan did in another UK ad.

Yeh this advert has been out for months, at least summer time last year.

Did you really just call Doctor Who a parody or spoof in terms of using lens flares?

Wonder how many years we are going to be repeatedly hear about the lens flares, no one really cares and besides as JJ & Co say it makes it look more real and less wooden like the TV shows did.

No I said the Doctor Who episode A Christmas Carol did a parody spoof of JJ's Trek. I couldn't find the clip of the scene on Youtube so I tried uploading it. BBC WorldWide blocked it however.

**EDIT: Success. I uploaded it to Dailymotion
See video below and judge for yourself.

Tropes of the Trek

JJ's Trek
Bridge style similar to JJ's
Lens Flares on steroids
Wide pans of characters talking
Shakey cam

Classic Trek
White uniforms like ones from TMP
The passenger ship is called a galaxy class ship like the ENT-D
The galaxy class ship looks like a Vulcan ship seen on Enterprise
Bridge parts made on explodium

Please reread my post thoroughly to avoid the presumption that I was comparing Doctor Who to Star Trek just over use of lens flares.

The use of lens flares in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special has been confirmed to be Trek XI inspired. And really, that's pretty obvious when you watch the episode.

The lens flares of Trek XI were too numerous and very silly, not to mention distracting. The sad thing is, I never noticed lens flares before I saw Trek XI. Now whenever I see one I'm pulled out of whatever I'm watching because I'm reminded of Trek XI.

The uniforms are in fact based on costumes worn by the characters in the 1947 Doctor Who story The Ark in Space, and Doctor Who has been naming starships Galaxy class since 1973.

Ah I see what you mean now, Ive never actually watched the whole episode (the only Who Christmas specials Ive managed to miss every time its on TV). Surely it wouldnt be termed a spoof though and more inspired by (as 'The Wormhole' has said its been confirmed to have been intended as) and not a spoof which would be more something the likes of Galaxy Quest did as an actual joke?

Fair enough on the lens flares, they have never bothered me but thats just my preference and everyones different.

^ Yeah Galaxy Quest is a good analogy.

AH I need to go back and watch said episodes. I'm a fan of Classic Who. I ascribed the similarities from classic Who to Trek seeing how they were doing a gag based on Star Trek. Go points though Wormhole.

Netfilx is streaming most of the new DW's now...

They have the last six seasons 2005-2011.

The first half of Season 7 (2012) is on DVD and available there also.
