I found out about this interview with Moore today, and I have to say, it is probably pretty controversal in the VOY fan community, because, boy, is Moore bashing the show!

Since Moore has defined Trek a lot, it is still an interesting read even for VOY fans:

eh, we know all that. It wasn't allowed to be the show someone or other envisioned it to be. We got something totally different and we had to wait for Battlestar Galactica to get what some were hoping for.

What we did get had plenty of charms :adore:

Why would it be controversial when he is giving his opinion? He is just one man that worked on one or two VOY episodes.

It would be controversial if we couldn't handle criticism.

Hilarious seeing Ronald D. Moore whinge about the production team breaking promises to the audience considering that every BSG episode opened with a claim that the Cylons had a plan.

    They didn't.

^It was actually the producers who didn't have a plan.

    BTW, nice avatar pic DalekJim.

People had a lot of complaints about Voyager. Seriously, I've never seen another show with an online atmosphere that toxic*. The people who hated it didn't just hate it, they H-A-T-E-D it and they had to let anyone who might be looking for what other people were saying about the show to know it. A lot of the critics felt Moore would be a perfect fit for Voyager and wanted him to remake the show in his image. They were elated when he joined Voyager, felt he was forced out wrongly (though if he was brought on and trying to remake the show to suit his vision when he was just another writer, that was out of place. Besides, his run on Voyager sucked. "Barge of the Dead" really sucked and felt out of place on Voyager. In fact, something about the Fall 1999 episodes feels off-kilter). Well, come a few years after Voyager ends, Voyager bashers finally got what they wanted- Moore's vision for Voyager, Battlestar Galactica. They saw how it turned out. What frustrates me is you can still hear laments of how people wished Voyager would be more like this or that even though they got what they wanted. Voyager was what it was, BSG was what it was. The landscape was so lopsided because the haters were loud and they didn't have an equally large contingent that loved Voyager to counterbalance them out. On the positive side of the spectrum, it seemed a lot of people merely liked Voyager; few seemed to really love it as intensely as others hated it.

(*: over the whole run. Sometimes individual seasons became toxic, like with the last vestige who hung onto X-Files and insisted it was still as great as ever in Season 9, who acted real nasty to anyone who was disgusted with the course of the show. Man, those people were some of the biggest psychos I've seen on TV forums, though when Stargate Universe went down, a certain fan website turned into the internet-equivalent of North Korea, like banning people for posting facts the moderators themselves posted in previous years, like ratings)

This is nothing new out of Moore. He was bashing Voyager ever since 1999 or so, perhaps even before. He did great on DS9, his run on Voyager sucked, at least he got to try his hand at his own series, allowing fans of his ideas to get a series catered to them.

In the BSG Movie the Plan, we see that they did have a plan.

Not stillborn, it did however expire in the Nursery's ICU quick enough.

So to stay honest, the opening sequence should have been adjusted to "They had a plan".

Which is not too different from the Babylon 5 season 3 opening credits monologue.

"Babylon 5 was the Galaxies last best, hope for peace... IT FAILED!"

Can you imagine Moore trying to get "We are the terrorists" past the suits? Not to mention the music is the exact opposite of Star Trek TV music*

    * standouts like some of the TNG scores excepted of course.

I dunno, seems Enterprise and NuTrek get a lot more hate than Voyager to me. Heck even Jolene Blalock was saying Enterprise sucked and they were out of touch with the fans at one point. :p

Personally I thought BSG newsgroup was more toxic than anything I had seen. And of course at the end, the whole place went Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

The best thing that ever happened to VOY was when the hate shifted to ENT.

The hate is always with us, it just moves around looking for fresh targets.

I've recently started watching VOY starting at Counterpoint, and going from there. The show is fine, touching even sometimes. Very sci-fiish at that point. What more can you ask for?

I think this was the original intention of Voyager..........before much of the viewing audience stated loosing interest in Trek. DS9 was grittier than TNG but they still needed to bring the Defiant and Worf on the show to keep those TNG fans watching. If Trek had remained in syndication and not gone on UPN, then this is the Voyager we would have gotten but going on a major network to compete against ABC, NBC, CBS & even FOX changed the game.
