New Uniforms for Into Darkness?

Not really, the redesigned uniforms look good compared to Adam West's Batsuit or most of the other Trek costumes, even though they are visually similar they are a completely different costume.

They are radical in the same way the Enterprise was radical but still give the same look while being a huge update.

 

If they're similar then they're not completely different ; )

At the end of the day though, they're big brightly coloured long sleeved shirts. If the intent was to keep the 60's aesthetic then fine, but against the backdrop of EVERYTHING ELSE they just look a bit silly.

I guess this shows a bit of the diversity in taste when it comes to fandom, to many especially the ones who hate the JJprise and cant stand the Bridge the uniforms are one of the elements most seemed to say they liked.

For me those uniforms are what says TOS so anything else would be wrong...but thats my opinion and you have yours, and when it comes to opinions we can both be right and wrong

 

i for one like the j.j./tos uniforms. the homage to the original tos uniforms has helped me accept the reboot as something that is based on the legacy of trek.

actually, back in the day, i remember having a difficult time with the new uniform for the movies. they just didn't seem like the same crew in those grey unitards or red formals. it just seemed too different. plus the red ones made shatner look like he had no neck lol.

 

Pajamas? Since when is a crewneck shirt, black trousers and boots "pajamas"?

I think the uniforms are fine, my only complaint is the lack of rank insignia for ensigns which is silly.
Hopefully Chekhov is now a Lieutenant and head of security.

But the Enterprise wasn't radically changed. It's pretty much the same but with more detail outside and brighter lights and modern computers and graphics inside. The uniforms reflect that, IMO - updated versions of what they wore in the original series.

I think you're on the losing end of that debate.

They could have made the Enterprise look like the one on Trek Remastered or the Defiant episode of Enterprise. Just the same with some subtle plating. And it would have rocked. But they decided to change something that was never broken in the first place.

And the uniforms aren't nearly as day-glo as the 60s originals. The uniforms are a modern superhero costume treatment, where all the colors are intentionally made duller so as not to look so cartoonish. So if some people still think they look silly, well, I guess it's a generational thing. The 60s aesthetic is what made Trek Trek, and part of the reason Enterprise failed as a series (IMHO) is they didn't have the courage to make it intentionally retro. It takes guts to do that, and play it seriously. They chose not to go there, but they could have, and I don't think it would have hurt the box office to do so.

 

It still looks like the Enterprise. A real change would have been something like adding a third nacelle, removing the secondary hull, having the nacelles face downwards, changing it into a rocket ship etc. The only changes they made were minor to all but the most obsessive Treknical fans. The same universe, but seen through the eyes of the 2010's instead of the 1960's.

 

Umm…no. I enjoyed the nostalgic kick on Enterprise but it would hardly have been appropriate for a big-budget blockbuster. It worked on TV because the vast majority of displays in homes at the time were 40" diagonal or less (16x9). On a PJ screen like in my HT, it was less impressive (and mine is small for a projector screen, at 64"). On a movie screen the size of even "faux" IMAX, it would look seriously out of place.

If that were true, then no Trek made after that time would have worked at all. I know some people feel that way, but that is hardly a consensus position.

It would never have gotten past the internal pilot screening before broadcast, if it even got that far. People buy "retro" for series set in a particular time period (Mad Men, BBC's The Hour, Boardwalk Empire, etc.). They would NOT buy (apart from a few hardcore Trek devotees) a sci-fi series set over 100 years into the future that looked less advanced than the 1960s TV production values of the original. Some would point to Firefly as contrary proof, but that one lasted a lot less long than Enterprise (regardless of the relative merits of each, the fact remains one made more money for its producers than the other and neither is viewed as a "success" in absolute terms). And even in Firefly, the premise was sufficiently different to make its approach more plausible (and its production values, while set in a "retro" world, were still miles ahead of 60s Trek). "Retro" Trek would have had to approximate Forbidden Planet-like aesthetics to be internally consistent with the expectation of purists. And that was NOT going to happen.

 

Shot in the dark here... but I'm guessing you've never worked in Hollywood before. Amiright?

On the dress uniforms, I note Kirk has a circle around is Delta badge with hollow star.
His shoulders have four bars on each shoulder.
Scotty doesn't have a circle round his badge and has two bars on each shoulder.
Chekhov again lacks the circle and has one bar on each shoulder.
All have the same stripes or lack of stripes on their cuffs as the first movie.
The Starfleet men wiith the funeral flag lack any bars or stripes and their Delta badges seem to lack hollow department symbol, they do however have the star on their shoulders. Might they be enlisted or ratings?
