What homages to ST-Prime shows/films do you WANT to see in STID?

One of the things that I personally enjoyed about Star Trek 2009 were all the callbacks and homages to Star Trek of old. The movie was literally littered with them. Some were overt, such as "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a physicist." Some of them were more subtle, such as Spock's dressing down of Kirk in front of the academic committee mirroring his conversation with David at the end of Wrath of Khan.

While some people viewed the endless references as a sign that the movie couldn't stand on its own without falling back on Old Trek, I didn't see it that way. Having said that, I do kind of hope there are fewer references this time around.

Now, having said THAT... there are still some things that I'd like to see. At the end of Star Trek 2009, they played an arrangement of Alexander Courage's original Star Trek theme. What I would personally like to see is the same treatment (or even more so) be given to Jerry Goldsmith's theme for Star Trek TMP (which was of course reused for Final Frontier and TNG). For me, that theme (combined with the fanfare from Alexander Courage's theme, the way it was done in Final Frontier) has always been the theme for Star Trek, even more so than AC's theme. Blasphemous, I know.

Another thing that I think could be used for good dramatic effect is a mirror of the conversation that Kirk has with Carol Marcus after they're stranding inside Regula, where they're talking about David. I know it's been spoiled that there's supposedly no romance between them in Star Trek Into Darkness, but of course there could still be down the road. The setup would be them having a son together, and Kirk faultering in his relationship with both Carol and said son (assuming David), leading Carol to tell him "Are we together? Are we going to be? You have your world, and I have mine, and I want him in mine!" To me, that would be chilling.

Is there anything that you hope they reference, either overtly or subtely?

Well there are at least two lines of dialogue in the first nine minutes that are borrowed from oldTrek - one of McCoy's lines is from "The Immunity Syndrome" and one of Spocks is from TWOK. So you've gotta figure there will be lots more. ;)

The want to hear the classic fight music! I can't imagine how they could make it work in a modern film, but I'd love to see them try.

Just from the teaser trailer, I see more of the TMP-inspired Admiral's dress uniforms, which was a cool touch at the end of Star Trek. The chunky red railing in the Enterprise corridors was cool to see too.

In the 9-minute preview...
Spock says the "Needs of the many..." line from "Wrath of Khan" and McCoy says "Shut up Spock, we're rescuing you!" from "The Immunity Syndrome"

I think Carol Marcus just being there is a HUGE nod to Wrath of Khan. I'm not sure they need any more than we've got already!

Hopefully non/nu-Trek fans will enjoy the homages, even if they don't get references. Though someone is bound to say "Hey, isn't that 'needs of the many' from Transformers 3?"

Me...I'll be sitting there grinning like a Cheshire cat.

I would like to hear some planet names mentioned, like Betazed, or Risa. Also perhaps some Ship names like the Stargazer etc

Assuming you mean Jerry Goldsmith's TMP theme, since that is tied so closely to TNG these days I doubt we'll hear it in a movie related to TOS again.

I'm not a big fan of recycled lines. It always just comes off more like parody than homage, especially if used excessively and blatantly. I actually didn't mind most of the ones in 2009, but I think some of the Kobayashi Maru stuff was a bit much.

Especially with a line like "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one." that was built up through an entire film for the climax of a character arc, and then served as the basis for an entire sequel.

But they might recycle that as well, given the plot of Kirk and family and stuff.

I'm inclined to agree. I was actually watching TMP the other day and, yeah, it actually felt a bit weird to hear that theme in a movie about the TOS crew.

Yes, I know TMP came first, but even still it's hard not to associate it with TNG these days . . ..
