    my thoughts exactly
It's funny because on one hand it seems that Spock is all vulcan and logic, apparently, but when you think about it he isn't as vulcan as he's being just impulsive and in a way.. illogical. That's not acting as a vulcan, it's acting like a human man who doesn't think about consequences.

So, I think that Uhura in the comics was totally right about him and I'm curious to know how they will play it in the movie because I expect them to deal with his grief in a realistic way.

Not officially, no. The best you can hope for is some special edition DVD/blu-ray of Trek XI with the nine-minute clip included. There is precedent for this, the first blu-ray release of Batman Begins in 2008 had the opening scene of The Dark Knight included with it.

However, if such a release were to happen, it would be no earlier then the second half of April.

Chill out, people. Imagine if they DID release these 9 minutes for everyone to see... You'd probably see it 956 times before May 2013. Don't you wanna enjoy the movie in its entirety, from the moment it begins?

Abrams genius really cannot be overstated. He gives you just enough in terms of spoilers to make any current Trek fan enough motivation to pre-order IMAX tickets for this film a month in advance if they'd sell it that soon.

I predict this film will shatter previous Trek box office records and by running this trailer on Hobbit it attempts to expand the fan base beyond current Trekkies anxious to see the film.

The marketing so far has a struck a good balance. I feel confident it will be at least as entertaining and pleasant as the last one, I've enjoyed the speculation and the information released thus far and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it comes out. At the same time, I've gotten as much info as I need and will do my best to avoid any further spoilers (other than any trailers I might catch) from here on in.

It's interesting that for some, spoilers ruin the experience whereas for others they don't. For me they typically don't because usually on Trek films there aren't any big surprises.

Now, had I known that Bruce Willis was already dead walking into the film The Sixth Sense, yea that would have ruined the experience.

I like to experience books, films, music, TV programmes (and any other form of storytelling) from a "fresh" perspective the first time, when possible. I often revisit them and appreciate them on various levels that I didn't catch the first time (most often with music) but I still like at least one crack at them without knowing what's coming (apart from a few tidbits here and there--and depending on the specific thing--without any at all).

If I get a hint that a film or book or TV programme has a significant twist to it, I will be especially careful to avoid any spoilers (and get rather upset if someone does spoil it for me deliberately). If I think it unlikely that there will be a major twist or "reveal", then I don't mind learning a few bits (like what we know now of the next Trek movie) but not too much. I know everyone expects a "reveal" about Cumberbatch's character (as do I) but I also know Abrams is loathe to allow such reveals to occur, so I've not been bothered by what's officially known so far. However, going forward, I suspect anything that is leaked will relate to the reveal, and I don't want that spoiled for me. I've been "teased" enough to want to see the film. I don't need anything more.

    I hate my brain...

When I first saw that film, I knew from the moment that the kid started talking to him, he was dead.
(I suspected it from the trailer also.)

I had to bite my tongue so as to not ruin it for my GF during the movie.

That's why I don't speculate out-loud, about movies I really want to see anymore.

I hate being right, in those instances.

I've seen the 9 minutes (BTW: The Hobbit was fantastic) and all the other clues, but I'm keeping my speculation to myself.

I'll just say a couple of things right now:

    • The sick child at the hospital in the opening sequence has somewhat thinning hair, but otherwise appears to be wasting as one would expect a sick child to be. At least to my eyes she didn't show any particular symptoms of progeria or any other "premature aging." So unless one of the early viewers who reported this has some other information or reason to know this, I'd say that looking to the child's illness as evidence of the villain's identity (genetic illness, aging etc) is probably a mistake.
    • Of course the father asks Cumberbatch "who are you?" just before the scene cutaway. The mystery of who, exactly, Harrison is will probably be central to the story as it unfolds rather than just a pre-release marketing tool.
    • The Spock/Uhura thing is still on, at least at the opening of the movie (she fusses over him and tries to kiss him through his helmet). Who knows where it will wind up by the end.
    • McCoy's line: "Shut up, Spock, we're trying to save you" - straight from "The Immunity Syndrome (please don't make a nerdish correction; I know that the original is slightly different)." Loved it. McCoy has the best lines in the sequence - and Scotty complains about the engineering issues with keeping the ship underwater.
    • The Enterprise looks damn good underwater. People who keep insisting that old-timey practical models "always look more real" than CG need to give it up - they're wrong, straight up, and have been wrong for a while.
    • I'm buying Pine as Kirk, no problem.
    • It's not Gary Mitchell.

I think Starship Troopers was probably the last great ship model movie.

    Maybe so.

The group of familiar faces aboard the Enterprise are endearing and mesh well, in this brief action sequences.

Essentially, this is Star Trek turned up to 11.

I liked the model work in Moon, although that was supplemented with CGI.

Moon is very good. I really meant ST for those big, elegant, slow-moving mass ships; Galactica, Star Destroyer, Trek starship like. Probably just me but I really felt those ships had heft.

Saw this 9 min preview, and loved it - glad I went to a theater that showed it.....love seeing a lot of diverse uniforms, like the first movie. That was always a complaint I had with the original movies and TNG era - everyone looked the same!!!! Diversity is key

I've seen you use some far-fetched rationales for why the contrived, shallow storytelling of Abrams Star Trek should be considered good, but this one takes the cake. Film marketers have made excellent trailers for a thousand bad movies, which is why bad movies frequently make good money.

The preview sounds as totally unoriginal as everything else I've seen or heard about this flick (even down to the copycat movie poster). It all sounds good for maybe a chuckle or two and some nonsensical FX eye candy, which I can get out of a hundred other tedious cookie cutter Hollywood action movies. Star Trek 2009 for example.

But I'm glad to read the synopses as they saved me from having even the slightest desire to spend the extra $5 to see The Hobbit in IMAX.

I think Dennis is on the mark with the ten-minute rule, in the very least. I'm having a hard time coming up with many Hollywood movies that had excellent set-up sequences only to fall apart later.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a good exception to the rule, thinking about it. The Shanghai opening is terrific, but once Indiana ends up in India (say that three times fast), the movie is a mess that not even a terrific John Williams score can save.
