Of course, she's a Borg. She raped her smarts out of a lot of unwilling victims, she's viciously sarcastic more than politely funny, and no, she is not personable, she is aloof, superior, disjoint and antisocial.

Yes, I agree.I always thought Tom Paris had a real arc; he does some serious growing up between seasons 1, 2, 5 and 6/7.
Kes had a couple of spots that could have been an arc, but were never connected.
That's why looking back, he sucks. But Hugh was so cuddly!
Tom's arc was about learning responsibility.
It was really more than just replacing one character with another, it was a total shift in storytelling that changed the dynamics of the series--as many have said, it became the Janeway/Seven/Doctor show.
One wonders if Seven was treated the same by the writers as Kes, where all of the characters had equal time, would Seven still have been as effective?

I think Paris became boring in the later seasons. Before that, he was a great character.

As for Kes, there was never any arc or any "Dark Phoenix" scenario. The two occasions where she "turned bad" during seasons 1-3 were "Cold Fire" and "Warlord" and they were both isolated events, due to outer forces. In "Cold Fire" she was tempted by the evil Tanis but in the long run she stood up against him and saved the ship from destruction. In "Warlord" she was controlled by the warlord Tieran who was in possession of her body and mind but she stood up against him too and was able to defeat him with a little help from her friends. After both those occasions she became her old self again.
Have you read The Eternal Tide yet Lynx? Kes is in that.
First of all, I'm very happy that Janeway is back!![]()
But, as Mick Jagger once wrote: "You can't always get what you want."

They finally brought back Janeway in the Voyager books? About time.
