When I was a very small kid that scene freaked me out. The pyrotechnics and smoke used in that scene looked like a real explosion that blew Yvonne Craig to bits. One of the more convincing effects explosions from TOS.

That's the thing with having watched this stuff when I was 14. The emotional impact from the first time is always there.
The Tellarite makeup got considerably better by the time "Whom Gods Destroy" rolled around, I'll give it that much. The painfully obvious masks from "Journey to Babel" had given way to more organic-looking Tellarite faces with more natural curves.
Although it means slugging through season 3, there are some gems in there. It's well worth it.

Breaking News: Anthony Pascale over at Trekmovie updated his analysis on his screenshots of the trailer in a post. He posted this in the comments section :
- Carol is ‘handing something’ (possibly a PADD) to Kirk, the flashing lights could have been scanner but now I dont think so

I have made some minor tweaks to the analysis
- Downgraded Kirk’s hand to ‘presumably’ – Not confirmed by trailer itself but he is wearing same shirt in other shots and it makes sense
- Carol is ‘handing something’ (possibly a PADD) to Kirk, the flashing lights could have been scanner but now I dont think so
- Kirk looking concerned shot from Japanese trailer appears to be at same location as Starfleet attack (note wall design)
- Clear ship crashing into ocean is not USS Enterprise (nacelles and struts are very different)

That revelation was less informative than a pamphlet on famous basketball players without arms, but at least we're not the only ones hyper- and mircoanalyzing this trailer.
If Anthony had anything confirmed there would probably be an entire article devoted to the exclusive.
