Demand for a King Conan film starring Arnold has been there ever since. That final image in Conan - The Barbarian screamed for that sequel. And now, Arnold has hit the right age to do it. It's perfect.

Hopefully John Milius will be involved. He just has to be.

Superman Returns matches up with the first movie almost seamlessly, real-world technological advancement aside; it's the second film that doesn't entirely fit, because Lois remembers having a relationship with Superman but doesn't remember that Clark is Superman.

Agreed. Any excitement drummed up by a new Conan movie would be all for naught if say, Paul WS Anderson landed the gig.

100% agreed. I just read "The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian"for the first timea month ago and see no similarities between the Momoa version and the book one. Arnold, on the other hand, definitely feels like the character from the book.

This is great news. I love the original Conan movie, so really hope this comes to fruition. And agreed on Milius. :)

A great collection of original Conan stories, expertly illustrated by comic artist Mark Schultz...who didn't try very hard to draw Conan as someone who makes you think of Jason Momoa...

Yeah, credit should be given too to Milius's directing. He illustrated the primal savagery of the Hyborian world very well and was able to take actors of limited range and bring out their performances to their best advantage in CtB.

I buy Conan as a thief much easier from Momoa than i would buy it from the bulky Ahnuld with his heavy german accent.

Because there has never been a German thief.

There had been german thiefs but Ahnuld does not look like a thief, more like a warrior and his accent is annoying.

Isn't Ahnuld Austrian, rather than German?

    yup.

if you look at the maps provided with "The Coming of Conan", the land Conan is supposed to be from is actually situated in relation to where Austria/Germany would be. So if you take that into account along with the physical descriptions of the character and how he was portrayed in the stories... a thief, but a thief who was also a war loving, high military IQ, hack & slash, beer guzzling barbarian king... Arnold was a damn good Conan.

I remember in the audio commentary for Conan the Barbarian, both Arnold & Milius talked about wanting to go back to the franchise and do a proper sequel to that first film, using that final image of King Conan as the starting point. They both sounded quite positive about the possibility at that time, and I had hoped that some sort of announcement would happen within 5 years or so. But then Arnie became the Governator, and now here we are 12 years later and we're finally getting something going. As you say, hopefully Milius will be involved somehow.

They are similar. Wasn't Conan supposed to be more brown skinned and less bulky according to the books?

Never read a Conan book, so don't know how he was described.

Regarding calling an Austrian, German, perhaps it's not all of the Austrians, but, I've known several Austrians, and every one that I've known has a really, really sensitive spot about being called German (IE: If you do it, duck, LOL)

The Cimmerians were a proto-Celtic people, not a proto-Germanic one. Their names were typically similar to Irish or other Celtic names (Conan is an Irish name). Of course, the ethnicity argument doesn't work in favor of either actor because neither Schwarzenegger nor Momoa are even a little bit Celtic.

Speaking strictly in terms of musculature, physical agility, attitude, and how he was portrayed in the stories, I think Momoa was a better Conan than Arnold was. I could buy Momoa's Conan as a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth. IMO, Arnold's Conan came across as a slow-moving simpleton in comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I think Milius' movie is vastly superior to Nispel's in pretty much every way. But just taking into consideration the two interpretations of the character itself, I'll take Momoa's over Arnold's.

It's sort of similar to the the relationship between The US and Canada, except Austria has been part of Germany several times. Austria was part of Germany during the Middle Ages, it was one of the first countries annexed by Nazi Germany, Hitler and other other high ranking Nazis were from Austria. They speak German in Austria, and I've heard it said that the German spoken in Bavaria is closer to Austrian German then it is compared to the German spoken in other parts of Germany.
After the whole experience with Nazi Germany and WWII, the Austrians aren't too keen on being confused with Germans though.

It's silly really. Just like all of you guys are English, they are German. That's what their language is called. The "Austrian" language, just like the "American" language, is German with a FEW differences, and that's it.

    And it's pronounced Koh-nin not Koh-NAN.
Not counting Hitler's conquest in the 1930s, Austrians have been seperate from Germany longer than Americans have been seperated from the United Kingdom by a factor of many centuries (though that Germany as a country no longer existed until the late nineteenth century when it defined itself as the German speaking world sans Austria kind of important).

And the only previous time they were part of Germany it was as a autonomous duchy in a feudal country that gradually dissolved in the late middle ages, unless one counts their loose involvement in non-binding Germanic groups.
