Okay, so he was a businessman, but that's a far cry from being Quark. Castle sells his creations for money too, but that doesn't make him Quark.

Without his beard, Ed Quinn looks like the love child of Scott Bakula and Harrison Ford.

^^Ummm... Did you not see "IMO" in my last post, Christopher? I get it - you don't agree. That's fine. Let's agree to disagree, dude.

I don't understand the defensiveness. This is a discussion board. There's nothing to discuss if nobody ever disagrees. Disagreement is not attack, it's just conversation. Which is what I thought we were all here to engage in.

It was hilarious when Beckett came out dressed as Lt. Chloe with the evil alien mask on. I couldn't stop laughing!

    Alexis.........whoa.............................

The laser gun was totally unbelievable but the rest of the episode was so fun i'm willing to overlook it.

^Yes, Beckett as Lt. Chloe, with a William Shatner song playing in the background. Awesome!

I totally missed that that was Shatner's voice. I guess I was trying to ignore the song because it was so weird and distracting from the scene.

The names of the Nebula 9 characters sounded very familiar, didn't they? Max Renard/Mal Reynolds, Chloe/Zoe, Kreavers/Reavers. And Oracle seemed to be a woman in a cryogenic chamber, reflecting how River (something of an oracular character herself) was introduced. Although I wonder if there was a nod to Blake's 7's ORAC there as well.

Okay, you know what? Castle has made a name for itself by bringing its in-universe works of fiction into reality as tie-ins, with the Nikki Heat novels and Derrick Storm comics. So what they should do now is produce a full 12 direct-to-video episodes of Nebula 9, starring Ed Quinn and Christina Moore (the "original cast" members from the episode). It was supposed to be a cheesy-looking show, so they wouldn't have to put too much money into it.

At the very least, they should do a Nebula 9 comic tie-in. I'm genuinely curious about the show's premise and characters.

Oh, another thought I had, which is kinda spoilery: We've been talking about the SF shows that were referenced here, but it struck me that the killer's motive was essentially that she was Tina Louise vis-a-vis Gilligan's Island -- wanting nothing more to do with the cheesy show she was famous for.

Also, did you notice that the opening scene foreshadowed the killer's identity?

Yes, which was why the "Captain" says something along the lines of, "am I the only one who finds something oddly familiar about this?" when the gun is held to his head.

I enjoyed it immensely. Did you all catch that the guy who was Castle's biggest fan, getting autograph at the beginning was Jonathan Frakes? I confess, I only caught it because of the TV Guide article. But it was fun to see him.

I can't believe I didn't realize that! Especially since I'd seen him in "These Are the Voyages" just hours before. (A painful experience, but one I considered necessary to endure at least once as part of my research for the Enterprise novel I'm writing.) I'm gonna have to watch this one again.

Frakes' exact line was "I'm your Number One fan." Obviously that phrasing wasn't by accident, and I had to rewind it a couple of times before my wife got it.

The working laser was the worst part of this episode, but I'll let it go since the rest of the show was so much fun.
I was hoping for a Stargate reference, at least a Jaffa walking around or something, but alas no, and I thought Will Wheaton was going to be in this.

And Castle comments under his breath "How far they fall" as Frakes walks away. I wonder if that was intended as a comment on how Paramount is now favoring TOS over TNG?

Also, what's the reason Firefly was only mentioned as "that Joss Whedon show" when there were so many nods to Firefly in the episode?

I doubt it. More of a joke that Frakes is standing in line to get an autograph.

Finally watched it last night and it was a lot of fun. Nice change of pace after the darker episode we had the previous week.

That's kind of what I thought, too — especially "scruffier" Ford in Star Wars.

There was also an episode of the new Hawaii Five-0 involving a guy murdered at a sci fi convention, leading to a great scene where Steve and Danno talk to an attendee dressed as Captain Sisko, and make the mistake of addressing him as "Captain Kirk."

They've made Firefly references before, but never use the series name. Two examples:
