Northeast Frankenstorm, hurricane Sandy.

We need to stop letting Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich direct our natural disasters, especially when NYC and DC are involved.

Nah... no one likes DC anyways.

I chatted with God. He doesn't blame gays, he just really doesn't like the Yankees.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has declared an "Alert" at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in Forked River, NJ due to flood waters. It doesn't appear that there is any immediate danger, though.

The NRC said that the plant, which is in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at 8:45 p.m. Eastern time “due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.”

The Commission notes that an Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. Before reaching Alert status, the plant declared an “Unusual Event” when the water first reached a minimum high water level criteria, the NRC says.
“Water level is rising in the intake structure due to a combination of a rising tide, wind direction and storm surge. It is anticipated water levels will begin to abate within the next several hours,” the NRC says.

The NRC added that as of 9 p.m. EDT, no nuclear power plants had to shut down as a result of the storm, adding that “all plants remain in a safe condition, with emergency equipment available if needed and NRC inspectors on-site.”

Edit: Bloomberg: NYU Hospital backup power has failed.

Over 200 patients had to be evacuated to other hospitals. Link

Frankenstorm's heavy snowfalls have finally reached Morgantown WV after having to put up with rain all day long.

Mind you some parts just a few miles to the East of me are already under several feet of snow. Talk about one large and weird October storm.

Letterman did his show without an audience or a full production crew. He did a lot of storm gags and praised Denzel Washington for showing up.

Jimmy Fallon is doing the same thing. It'd be funny if Denzel showed up.

Highly unlikely, given that Fallon and Letterman tape their shows at the same time, and it's not like there'd be any context for Washington's appearance on Fallon.

My aunt and uncle live in Pleasantville, some miles south of NYC. We haven't been in contact in many months, but I hope they're okay.

Apparently there are many blocks on fire in NYC and no crews able to get to them.

Listen to this one: "Beach 207 St in Breezy TL-124 is reporting he has 2 full blocks of houses on fire."

This is probably a dumb question, but why wouldn't the torrential rain and floodwaters effectively prevent that kind of thing?

Just got up (it's that time of day here now) and am -of course- watching the news *yikes* you guys got hit hard!

On the news was that planes for the effected area of the US are leaving Europe -again...

Made me look up this:

There's a hole in the sky!! (from flightradar24.com)

Ruptured gas mains and gas leaks in homes might be fueling the flames. Exploding transformers and downed power lines and structural electrical systems can be causing fires. Gas, flammable materials, and debris in sewers has flooded up to the surface and could be burning. A lot of homes and buildings are abandoned, so no one is reporting the fires until they've spread pretty far. Fire departments are having trouble reaching the fires and dealing with so many of them and there's little to no water pressure for the hoses, so they burn longer. High winds blow the flames across great distances. Rain is not consistently falling and not always strong enough to drown the fire. Flooding has gone down in many areas. Take your pick.

In other news:

The replica of the HMS Bounty from the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty film and Pirates of the Caribbean sank in the storm, with the loss of one crewperson and presumably the captain, who stayed with the ship and hasn't been found. The rest of the crew was rescued.

^That's terrible. Not that it's the only aspect of this that is, but still.
A friend took this photo, Avenue C and 20th st in Manhattan:

Gods, that's terrifying!

I'm sending all my good thoughts to you all in the affected areas. Stay safe. I'm sure you are already, but still.

While I'm not in the affected area (and indeed have neither lived there nor travelled in that direction in my life before), I thought I'd chip in here and send all those who are affected by the Hurricane my thoughts for these next few days. Hang in there, keep the spirits high, and hope you all stay out of danger and harm. :)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Well, this is horrific. :( There's nothing to compare with that kind of damage around here. In fact, it's pretty quiet around here at the moment and we haven't lost power or cable (although I'm sure it's a different story on the South Shore and the Cape).

Stay safe, everybody. Don't take any chances.

CNN is just reporting that a dam or levee breached in New Jersey around midnight and that they may have to rescue/evacuate possibly up to a thousand people in the three towns downstream from the dam. One of the towns that was most flooded (the water is up to head level) was called Moonachie and it's in Bergen County. People are on top of their homes and trailers awaiting rescue. and emergency workers are using as many large vehicles and boats as they can find to get people off the roofs in the freezing weather.

I'm more worried about the nuclear power plants that are on alert. But 50 houses is damn many.

And the winds would fuel the fire more than the rain would put it out.
