We need to stop letting Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich direct our natural disasters, especially when NYC and DC are involved.

Letterman did his show without an audience or a full production crew. He did a lot of storm gags and praised Denzel Washington for showing up.
Jimmy Fallon is doing the same thing. It'd be funny if Denzel showed up.
Highly unlikely, given that Fallon and Letterman tape their shows at the same time, and it's not like there'd be any context for Washington's appearance on Fallon.
Apparently there are many blocks on fire in NYC and no crews able to get to them.

My aunt and uncle live in Pleasantville, some miles south of NYC. We haven't been in contact in many months, but I hope they're okay.
This is probably a dumb question, but why wouldn't the torrential rain and floodwaters effectively prevent that kind of thing?

Just got up (it's that time of day here now) and am -of course- watching the news *yikes* you guys got hit hard!
On the news was that planes for the effected area of the US are leaving Europe -again...

Ruptured gas mains and gas leaks in homes might be fueling the flames. Exploding transformers and downed power lines and structural electrical systems can be causing fires. Gas, flammable materials, and debris in sewers has flooded up to the surface and could be burning. A lot of homes and buildings are abandoned, so no one is reporting the fires until they've spread pretty far. Fire departments are having trouble reaching the fires and dealing with so many of them and there's little to no water pressure for the hoses, so they burn longer. High winds blow the flames across great distances. Rain is not consistently falling and not always strong enough to drown the fire. Flooding has gone down in many areas. Take your pick.
In other news:
The replica of the HMS Bounty from the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty film and Pirates of the Caribbean sank in the storm, with the loss of one crewperson and presumably the captain, who stayed with the ship and hasn't been found. The rest of the crew was rescued.

While I'm not in the affected area (and indeed have neither lived there nor travelled in that direction in my life before), I thought I'd chip in here and send all those who are affected by the Hurricane my thoughts for these next few days. Hang in there, keep the spirits high, and hope you all stay out of danger and harm.

Well, this is horrific. 
There's nothing to compare with that kind of damage around here. In fact, it's pretty quiet around here at the moment and we haven't lost power or cable (although I'm sure it's a different story on the South Shore and the Cape).

CNN is just reporting that a dam or levee breached in New Jersey around midnight and that they may have to rescue/evacuate possibly up to a thousand people in the three towns downstream from the dam. One of the towns that was most flooded (the water is up to head level) was called Moonachie and it's in Bergen County. People are on top of their homes and trailers awaiting rescue. and emergency workers are using as many large vehicles and boats as they can find to get people off the roofs in the freezing weather.
