Models in Local Commercials

Usually when a local business wants to do a commercial they likely contract with local modeling agencies or something for the "talent" on screen. Naturally, these often pretty young women are good at looking good and not too much else, at least when it comes to screen work. Little can be known about their talents in other areas.

More often these local businesses tend to be new or used car lots, but there there's been other local businesses that've done it.

So anyway, maybe it's just the pool of models in my area but it seems like whomever is making the commercial and coaching these women isn't... Well, isn't doing a good job. The women usually shout in an unnatural tone of voice that sounds as if they're trying to talk to you in a loud room, rather than simply trying to project their voice on whatever it is they're trying to sell.

Is this a trend with local commercials in your area or do the models in my area just really suck at being in commercials?

I think low-end places are going to afford low-end talent, but cheap commercials seem to have always been like you describe, whether it was a young woman or anyone else.

Plus they probably don't use the best equipment to make the commercials and they're making them in a car dealership building or outside, so they may have to yell.

I remember decades worth or car dealer commercials with some loudmouth in it. Ah, the memories.

Actually, I think the yelling and quality of cinematography that you describe is simply indicative of it being a commercial for a used car ad. There are very few used car ads that have any kind of talent in them and they usually have to yell to be heard.

Local commercials can often be hilarious. Just google "Steve Mizerany". :guffaw:

I like watching them on the Spanish language stations since they usually feature hot latinas in short skirts. They usually pretty good at delivering what they need to deliver as well.

I cracked up when I saw this late night infomercial with this financial guru hawking his crap. Because there just happened to be these two extremely hot babes sitting in chairs listening to what he said. I had to respect the shamelessness of putting them in there even though it had absolutely nothing to do with the subject.

Local television has almost always been awful, but at least now you only have to suffer through the odd 30-second commercial. You could have been around during the days when local TV stations produced content of their own beyond the daily news programs - content often just as low-budget and awful as those car-dealer spots.

No.

True, most of it was rather bad, but occasionally a pearl would surface above the vat of "ick", like "Mystery Science Theater 3000". But having seen clips from the KTMA era, even that needed polishing when the "Comedy Channel" (before it became "Comedy Central") purchased it.

Sincerely,

Bill

Local TV in Los Angeles wasn't all that bad back in the 1960s if you were a grade-schooler (Sheriff John, Engineer Bill, Hobo Kelly) or a teenager (Hollywood a Go Go).

Check out those totally hot dancing babes.

(Yeah, I'll find any excuse to link to a video with pretty girls in it.)

When I lived in Indiana, I found this lady to be really annoying:

Apparently, she graduated from the same university I went to.

"THAT'S WATSON'S."

I was kind of a fan of the Empire Carpet guy. That went national, but started local, and was still local back when I lived up there while I was in junior high. I think the ads are a big part of how they ended up national!

^ Loved the Empire Carpet guy!

Also from Chicagoland TV, Harry Schmerler your singing Ford dealer.

And Victory Auto wreckers. They still use the same commercial to this day. They've updated the audio, but the guy with the 70's extra-wide wristwatch band always cracked me up.

I wish that guy did books on tape.

Pretty much. Cal Worthington is famous in California for his song and for yelling his catchphrase.

Lulz, Ford Probe. You've gotta see this thing!

Hey, I remember her. That's Jennifer, the Watson's girl. Damn, you're right, she was annoying as hell and those commercials went on for years. Fortunately, the business has changed names and ownership and she's moved on to greener pastures somewhere that's not on my TV screen.
