Neill Blomkamp's Elysium Synospis Revealed

Sounds pretty cool to me. I liked District 9, and I'm a big fan of most of the cast members so I'll be keeping a very close eye on this one.

What is Michael Shanks doing in that cast? A bit out of his league, isn't he? And has Matt Damon become the go-to guy for dystopian sci fi now?

The description sounds meh, like a lot of stuff we've all seen/read before. Maybe they'll make the Bad Rich Folks entertainingly garish, a la The Hunger Games. The worst approach: being obvious and boring about it.

The film was filmed in Vancouver, I assume he has a bit role...I just listed him since he was listed in the wikipedia article. Christopher Judge is in "The Dark Knight Rises". They're dividing the blockbusters between them maybe :)

two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.
It sounds like Soylent Green's population of Earth.

I searched for a previous thread, but there didn't seem to be any that were recent. The first plot synopsis/film description for "Elysium" was revealed yesterday.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

So a bunch of incredibly wealthy celebrities who live luxurious lifestyles in pristine, often gated, communities, have made a movie (probaby financed in part by corporate studio tax breaks) about how such inequality is bad.

This is going to be the comedy hit of the year!

IMDB says Faran Tahir is also in the cast. Is that a big negative?

No, this is not above Shanks' paygrade. He just finished as lead in a network series, even if it was just a summer series. Disliking SG1 doesn't make Shanks a bad actor.

Also, Blomkamp's movie was overhyped, apparently as a safe alternative to Avatar. The negative stereotypes of the Nigerians in District 9, and the safe appeal to facile sentimentality about family were much more comfortable than some of the overtones in Avatar. Praising District 9 as the artistic rival in any event betrayed poor judgment, whatever the reason.

Edit: "superior artistic rival" I should have said.

Or Battle Angle Alita?

Syd Mead worked on some of the visual design, so in any case, it ought to look good.

So no matter how bad the plot, it won't be an entire waste to see it?

Plotting wasn't a problem of District 9, so I see no reason to suspect that this film will be bad at it. But, in any event, it should have an interesting visual design.

Another film Mead worked on, TRON, might well be described in the terms you use: poorly plotted, but pretty to look at. It seems to have its fans.

Sounds like 'Cloudminders' Stratos city in space. District 9 was a cool concept though. I like scary demonic aliens that are incomprehensible.

Oh, also waiting for the cruise sci-fi flick which sounds much better. More space ships and a better story.

I wonder how Damon will play hs character. It looks like some tough merc or something like that. Did he ever play anybody like that?

He's played action heroes before, most obviously as Jason Bourne. But, simply judging from the character's look, this one appears to be a bit of a departure from past roles.
