Starship Names

IIRC, there was a USS ShirKahr [sic] spotted in DS9, named for Spock's hometown, which was spelled "ShiKahr" in old novels, "Shi'Kahr" in the 2009 movie's alternate opening and "Shi Kahr" on some set decoration in Enterprise. The extra "r" in "USS ShirKahr" was a typo.

So... there's that. One spelling out of four, which wasn't the one actually used on the model of the ship.

The extra "r" in "USS ShirKahr" was a typo.

...Although it could be a wholly different place/person on Vulcan, too. After all, "Newark" isn't a misspelling of "New York", despite appearances.

It does seem USS T'Kumbra is the only onscreen starship with an apostrophe in the name. And even that ship was represented by stock footage, carefully done so that it is impossible to see the name of the ship - so the same shots were used to portray USS Prometheus ("Second Sight"), USS Lexington ("Explorers") and USS T'Kumbra ("Take Me In the Holosuite" or somesuch), and most probably none of those names were ever actually painted on the model...

So technically, there has never verifiably been an apostrophe in a starship name. For all we know, the "correct" spelling of that Vulcan name is Tikumvra!

But did you notice how many starships share their names with Chrysler products?? Dakota, Challenger, Intrepid, Horizon, Valiant, Concord(e), Voyager, Aries, Hornet, Reliant, and Avenger. Chrysler went so far as buying out American Motors so it could own Eagle, Ambassador, and Renegade - Matador and Javelin are non-canon but used in the video game ST: Armada. There are others out there from other vehicle manufacturers (Honda's Odyssey, Nissan's Titan, Chevy's Venture, Pontiac's Phoenix, etc.) but Chryslet has had the most by far. I'm still waiting for the Dodge Excelsior and the Chrysler Enterprise.
