THE HOBBIT (2012/2013): News, Rumors, Pics Till Release

Surprised to find out that Arwen/Liv Tyler isn't in it. When they are in Rivendell, wouldn't have been a problem to have a small scene with her and Agent Smith.

Arwen was living in Lothlorien with her grandmother Galadriel at the time of The Hobbit.

But we see Galadriel in Rivendell in the trailers. Granted, that doesn't mean Arwen had to travel with her. She could have stayed in Lothlorien.

Yes but Arwen met Aragorn during his Ranger days in Lothlorien. If she was present in Rivendell at the time of the Hobbit she would have met him then as he was already under Elrond's protection - however Aragorn would have been seven years old! Arwen was over 2000 by this time. :p

I would be very surprised if we get a glimpse of Smaug in An Unexpected Journey even in a flashback history tale on Erebor. We might, might a smidgen of him in such a scenario but only enough to tantalize us a la Gollum in Moria in The Fellowship of the Ring.

And I'm very, very, very glad Arwen isn't in this in any shape or form! :p

There was an army of Elves in Helm's Deep, so any book continuity argument is invalid. ;) :p

I think it makes more sense dramatically to wait on showing Smaug. I know the rule is normally to show not tell, but it's not a complicated backstory "there's a dragon who stole our mountain." If I'm not mistaken, it's even in song form.

And somewhat incestuous too. ;)

What do you expect from a couple of royals? :p

Sorry for the double post, but some An Unexpected Journey toys have apparently hit shelves. Included in the set are Legolas and Tauriel, who were likely going to appear in AUJ until the decision to turn the duology into a trilogy. Anyway, TORn took some snapshots which give us our first glimpse of Evangeline Lilly's Tauriel:

Not a huge deal, but I figured people might be curious to see her, given her status as character invented for the movies.

Possibly they're both in the scouting party that capture the dwarves in Mirkwood? I mean that's the logical place for Legolas to show up, no?

I note she's dark haired, so being his sibling or other relation seems unlikely. Actually, what is the significance of elven hair colour? I gather it has something to do with which first age group from which they are descended? Does that mean everyone in the woodland realm should be blonde, or just the royalty/nobility?

...perhaps it's just as simple as they're the only pretty people in the whole trilogy.

And invented twice, since, if I remember right, she was initially called Itaril and played by Saoirse Ronan.
As far as I know, Itaril was nothing more than an internet rumor.
Oh maybe the name "Itaril" was a rumor, but Ronan was in talks to play a role in the movie.

Yeah, I saw that poster a few days. Everyone seems to be raving about it on Facebook but I'm not entirely sure why. It's a nice poster but nothing special.

Bilbo looks a bit like Pippin in that poster. Also, it's worth noting that the poster doesn't promote any of the humor, charm or whimsy we'll see in the film. It's clear that its tone (moody sky, serious expression, the position of Sting) is meant to appeal to LOTR film fans - a point reinforced by the tagline across Bilbo's head.
