Neil Armstrong has died

I just saw this in the news and was shocked. I guess I shouldn't have been, but in my mind Neil Armstrong is forever young, always the young man who took that first brave venture to the moon. It was hard for me to picture him becoming old and vulnerable, succombing to such an "ordinary" death.

He will always be larger than life to me.

I must say, given that this is a board populated by sci-fi fans, in particular Star Trek fans, a show whose airing on tv coincided with the Space Race and the Moon landings, I'm surprised that there hasn't been more of a response to this news.

Four threads with ~120 replies between them on the first day seems like a pretty decent response to me. It's just split between them so it doesn't seem like as much.

Ah, that's more like it. I don't care which thread they're doing it in, so long as people are acknowledging him. :)

A true legend. I firmly believe walking on the moon is the greatest achievement mankind has made.
In 500 years this man will still be remembered. RIP.

Really sad news. A real Hero. So much so that I never expect him to die. But he will live on forever.

There have been 43 American presidents, but only twelve American moonwalkers. Armstrong was the first man ever of any nation to do so. It feels like his passing is equivalent to the death of a President, for those reasons.

Can anyone remember the final nine moon-astronauts? Are most of them living?

I'd just finished watching "James May on the Moon" and the "Real Apollo 13"....then heard the news.

...I'd say Godspeed or RIP but he's already been to heaven and walked on it.

Goodbye Neil.

In yet another brilliant move for NBC, newscasters announced last weekend that reknowned astronaut Neil YOUNG had died. To them, he was the first man on the moon. NBC is rapidly becoming the Starscream of broadcast networks.....
