Issue of acceptance

Sometimes I go to Memory Alpha to read up about an episode I just watched and with surprise find out that the crew found teh episode to be weak, that it was "too prolonged" or "not scary enough" if such a goal was set, etc.

But when it comes to TNG, I continually find that I fall for the episodes and feel engaged, scared or whatever they wanted to do.

Am I alone in this?

Surely not. But even the production crew are just voicing their opinions; there are no statements of fact on the matter beyond the facts that those individuals were not satisfied with their work.

I love reading the actor/producer/writer opinions on Memory Alpha and I really enjoy the production notes and reception pieces at the end of their episode reviews. Very interesting to see how the episodes came about, what the writers wanted to do and how the stories eventually came into production.

Well I think often they were just responding to what they saw in the script. But with the proper editing, effects, and music added in the final episode could appear a whole lot stronger than anyone expected.

The production team had a particular goal in mind when the episode was produced, while we the audience only see the finished product. So when the production people say something was weak, it's because they didn't achieve what they wanted to, even if the final episode looks good to us.

Everyone's going to have an opinion from the people on set to the casual fans and those opinions will vary widely by human nature.

Just how it goes, I do find it very odd that some people will put more weight on the opinion of someone affiliated with the episode, however loosely, than their own.

I'll either like or not like an episode based on what I watched and thought of it and it really doesn't matter if everyone from Roddenberry and Stewart to the guy sweeping the set thought it rocked or sucked collectively.

This is obvious really. The producers/actors are merely expressing their opinion like everyone else. An artist can explain his work if s/he feels the need but it doesn't affect the viewer's response to it. Or rather it shouldn't. If you see something completely differently once the artist has given their explanation of it, then I would argue you are being too suggestible. People should have faith in their own reactions.
