No, but if Defender gets greenlit, I'm definitely going to get that mixed up with Defiance all the time.

Josh Whedon to develop Avengers show for ABC.

    So, Namor anyone? ;)

If I had my choice, I'd opt for a WWII era series on the adventures of Cap and Bucky, even at the cost of having to recast Cap with an Evans look-alike. For Bucky, Sebastian Stan would be available since Political Animals is pretty much toast in the ratings and Once Upon a Time won't keep him busy with his recurring role.

I honestly hadn't noticed the similarity in the titles before.

Never mind the fact that Political Animals is a limited run series to begin with.

USA was eyeing it to be a regular series, though -- if the ratings were there. They weren't.

Uh, no. You're the one who made the assertion, so the burden of proof is on you.

Pretty well, thanks. This is a great time for independent creators and always getting better (just ask Chris Mihm :rommie:). The problem is advertising, of course, but I've sold a decent number of copies in at least six or seven countries and gotten great feedback from my readers. Also, being an independent creator has put me in touch with other independent creators, from writers to artists to filmmakers to rock'n'roll musicians, so I'm experiencing a lot of great stuff that's bypassed the suit-and-tie filter.

Right, like USA would ignore killer ratings and not extend the series if they could. Why else is the plot line being set up for a multiyear arc, with Elaine challenging the President? It's stunningly obvious what their real plan was, and their crappy ratings scuttled it.

And since we all talking about RJDiogenes' artistic endeavors now, I'm curious. Where can I get a sample of your stuff and of course the first chapter is free, right? ;)

Self publishing is one of those areas that seem to be burgeoning in all directions now, parallel to YouTube and freemium games where the revenue stream is based in virtual goods. The problem for all such producers is exactly what you're running into - building awareness. As the corporate barriers for publishing books, games, etc fall down, the sheer volume of content creates another barrier - the need for filtering and matching content with a consumers' interests.

The existence of every form of remake and retelling over the past 100,000 years IS my proof. Writers, musicians, artists, architects, Hollywood, Samsung, Sony, Apple, the list goes on and on of people re-using ideas. Some out right copying while others make them their own.

^^ Great artists are the ones that good artists steal from, because they're the ones who create original works. It's just that lesser artists outnumber the great ones by orders of magnitude.

Thanks for your interest. :) Unfortunately, there's no free chapters, but my e-book is only 99 cents; it's available for the Nook and Kindle. Also, if you search for "Rick Hutchins" on Google Books, you can see some excerpts from my paperbacks Large In Time, The RH Factor and King of the Zombies. My deviantArt and YouTube pages are free, of course, and the links are in my sig.

That's exactly it. Advertising is expensive and what I've attempted hasn't been worth the expense. Even the ad in Weird Tales didn't do that much. I'm thinking about trying a couple of other niche publications later this year.

Even the great artists steal/are influenced by previous artists. Especially in fiction. There is no plot that hasn't been used before.

Who says HBO doesn't do sci fi?

Hmm. I have a feeling that swashbuckling space opera is going to be more my kinda thing...

Masquerading as part of an intergalactic fleet... I wonder how that one will be played. Hopefully not primarily for laughs, but I'll take what I can get, and who knows, maybe it will be funny.

I'm tempering my expectations as best as possible.

I read a series of short stories some years ago with the same premise. In the end the mercenary team ended up being drafted into the intergalactic fleet thus validating everything they did.

Never heard of this Todd Stashwick guy, so I looked him up. As an actor he has been in a great many shows including Enterprise, but as a writer/producer he doesn't seem to have done anything besides a few comics. I can't imagine SyFy making him a showrunner with so limited experience.

His twitter has some interesting tidbits. Apparently the logline from Deadline made Clandestine sound more like Firefly than it really is.

    Influenced, yes. Steal, no.

That's two Space Operas that Sciffy is working on. Hopefully at least one of them makes it (I'm rooting for RHW, of course, but it would be nice if they both survive).

Robert Hewitt Wolfe has a co-executive producer credit on Alphas. Is this just a golden parachute-type formality and he's already been kicked out (along with Ira Steven Behr?) Or is he planning on leaving Alphas if his series gets picked up?

The notion of space as so friendly an environment people can just wander about ad lib doesn't seem very promising. Actually, the notion that people can just sneak into an army at all seems more like something borrowed from old movies rather than a real idea.
