Then, there's Victoria, and, even though she was from the future, Leela.
Victoria, whose first action when joining the TARDIS was to put on a mini-skirt! (Proving my point for me again.)
In a story, written in the sixties, a distinction you forgot. To paraphrase a certain cigarette brand slogan "We've come a long way, baby."
And that shows, what, exactly?
In any case, people from the 1800's weren't drooling idiots. Anyone with an education would understand the concept of phones, airplanes and the like.
Would they go from this:

to this:

in five minutes flat, though?
Also it would be nice to have one who isn't married to their cel phones. A device which in the last season or so has become about as overused as the sonic screwdriver.
And that shows, what, exactly?
That a Companion from the Past will pretty quickly become indistinguishable from a Companion from the Present; which is probably one of the reasons they haven't introduced a new one in FORTY FIVE years...
Based on the photo, I guess the Christmas episode isn't set at Christmas. Or, it's set in Australia.
Character Options will have a field day with all the Series 7 Action Figures they can release...
I love the hat!
I wholeheartedly agree on wanting a historical companion!
I hope we don't get a historical companion. The companion is 'us'. If both the Doctor and the companion can't provide us with a contemporary point of view, we may lose something which, for me, is an integral part of the show's success.
The problem with the whole "Historical Companion" idea is that for the series to function they have to acquire a 21st Century level of knowledge within a few episodes, so half the running time isn't taken up with the Doctor explaining basic concepts to them. At which point they're not really a historical character anymore.
