Series 7 FINALLY Starts Shooting

In a story, written in the sixties, a distinction you forgot. To paraphrase a certain cigarette brand slogan "We've come a long way, baby."

And this is from one of her later episodes. (Though the first one she actually shot.)

And that shows, what, exactly? Is it your position that if Charlotte from the movie Hysteria was placed into a position as a time traveler, she would persist in wearing clothing from her own period? I don't think so. That may be true of Emily, but not Charlotte. That would depend not solely on the time period from which she hailed, but her class, her background (free thinker or traditionalist) and other factors.

And that shows, what, exactly?

That a Companion from the Past will pretty quickly become indistinguishable from a Companion from the Present; which is probably one of the reasons they haven't introduced a new one in FORTY FIVE years...

In any case, people from the 1800's weren't drooling idiots. Anyone with an education would understand the concept of phones, airplanes and the like.

Would they go from this:

in five minutes flat, though?

Sure. In tv reality. :)

It is sort of addressed in Tomb of the Cybermen. Jamie was apparently the one who picked out the dress, and she did seem a bit uncomfortable at first.

My only point in wanting a companion from the past is it seems rather silly that the Doctor suddenly decides to only adopt companions from 2005-2012. Whats so special about that time period? Also it would be nice to have one who isn't married to their cel phones. A device which in the last season or so has become about as overused as the sonic screwdriver.

But you can't pretend they don't exist. And a new Companion whenever or wherever they're from will still to have some way of contacting the Doctor when they're not together.

But in that time they've had alien companions, some of whom haven't originated from advanced civilisations. Leela never behaved like a woman from the 1970s, and both Adric and Nyssa never really seemed to fit in in the present day episodes.

Of course it helps when you don't spend every other bloody episode in the early 21st Century...

But I don't see any reason why a historical companion can't work, though I admit it'd be easier with someone from decades rather than centuries ago. All it takes is a bit of consistency in the writing to drop references to the fact that Sally's from 1965, the same way they do with Jack being from the 51st Century.

There's a hint of talking down to the audience with this notion that they can only relate to a modern day companion and only relate to stories set on a council estate.

Yet another new outfit for the 11th Doctor; this time for the Christmas Special. In fact, he's wearing different clothes in all the post-Ponds episodes we've seen photos from. The only one we don't know about is the one set on a submarine because it (obviously) had no outdoor shooting done.

Character Options will have a field day with all the Series 7 Action Figures they can release...

Snicker!

For years I and some friends have joked that Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka would have made an interesting Doctor. Now we see the BBC approved character dressed AS Willy Wonka!

Sincerely,

Bill

I love the hat!

Have a long dearth of no hats for The Ninth and Tenth Doctors (although the latter may have one or two brief incidences of hat-wearing0, I'm thrilled to no end by the plethora of hat apparel that The Eleventh Doctor wears. One of the many, many reasons he's already in my top three favorite Doctors (and may soon surpass the almighty Patrick Troughton).

I hope we don't get a historical companion. The companion is 'us'. If both the Doctor and the companion can't provide us with a contemporary point of view, we may lose something which, for me, is an integral part of the show's success.

The problem with the whole "Historical Companion" idea is that for the series to function they have to acquire a 21st Century level of knowledge within a few episodes, so half the running time isn't taken up with the Doctor explaining basic concepts to them. At which point they're not really a historical character anymore.

But if the Doctor takes a present day companion to past or the future he still has to explain things to them or in reality the audience. And a companion's clothes don't really mean much, Sarah Jane wore something similar to a halter top in Planet Of Evil and what was supposedly one of Voctoria's dresses in Pyramids Of Mars.

Which is The Sun cribbing from Doctor Who Magazine, and then reading too much into what they've cribbed. Smith doesn't actually say he'll be in the next series, just that Moffat has described it to him (and that it's awesome, but what else is he going to say?). Moffat also described the 2010 series to David Tennant, who loved the idea but still decided not to be in it.

So am I going to be watching new Who a week on Saturday?

Feels like it's been forever since it was last on.
