Twentieth Anniversary DS9 Book by DRG III

I like the changing authors for the series with more standalone stories like TNG and Titan. On the other hand I do like keeping the same authors for stuff with the stuff with deeper arcs like DS9 and VOY seem to be doing. I'm really hoping Titan goes back to more standalones with changing authors.

:D:beer::hugegrin::biggrin::bolian: This is fantastic news.I'm so glad Simon& Schuster decided there was aneed for a novel to commerate DSs9 20th anniversary.I definitely look forward to to seeing how David will continue the ds9 story left off in the previous novel.

While I really like the use of a steady author for a line to keep the present story consistent, I would really like to see them start releasing novels for the various series like they do for TOS, random one shot stories I can enjoy that take place at some random point in time that don't require me read a dozen recent novels and a fan designed flowchart to figure out where everything fits.

Yes!!

Yes FREAKING YES!!!!! Not only more DS9, but penned by DRGIII. Made my frickin' day!

If I had to bet, I would imagine that DRGIII's book will include significant details on the Ascendant incident. Not necessarily so much as to preclude another book specifically on that whole thing, but enough to fill us in. Kira's
career change
, in particular, seems like it needs some explaining, and so some gap-filling between TSK and RBOE seems likely. On the other hand,
with Kira out of the picture, maybe that won't be as urgent.

In any case, I add my voice to the chorus of enthused readers. Huzzah!

Y'see this is what drives me(and other outsiders) crazy about the publishing business. The DS9 relaunch has just happened and yet the publishers are only now commissioning the next installment.I mean, isn't this kinda thing that derailed the previous relaunch??

And please,I know that this is just how the business works and yadda yadda ..

I have no idea what you're saying here. What "derailed" the previous DS9 post-finale series was the global economic crash of December 2008 that devastated the publishing industry (among many others) and forced Simon & Schuster to lay off many of its employees, including Marco Palmieri, whose long-term plans for the DS9 series were thus abandoned. I don't know why you'd think scheduling had anything whatsoever to do with it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the publishing license of Simon and Schuster due to expire at the end of the year. It was only renewed in early June. It seems to me that it would be extremely foolish of S & S to commission novels to far in advance when there was a possibility that they would not be allowed to publish them.

In addition, there are numerous other novels that are competing for the limited number of publishing slots available in a given 12 month time frame. I think I heard something about some big Star Trek type event in May that probably has been a bit of a focus as to which novels to publish during the early part of the year.

A 20th Anniversary novel/s has probably been on the schedule for a long time, however only recently did S&S decide who would write it.

Can we just assign writers as follow:

mack TNG
Beyer VGR
Swallow\Bennett Titan
DRG3 DS9.
There done. No other authors need apply.

As awesome as these writers are, my $0.02 is that I don't care for that approach. It works for a series with a particular style (New Frontier, and even that got stale after a while) or a limited series like Vanguard. But some series really benefit from having different voices and styles in the mix. TNG, DS9, and TTN come to mind. Again, I don't mind that DRGIII is writing the 20th anniversary book, and I'm definitely buying it, but I would like to see the series open up again to other authors.

Awesome news. I hope it's set during the gap, but whenever it takes place, I can't wait to read it.

The renewal wasn't announced until early June, but it happened a few months sooner. Generally announcements of things in the publishing industry lag some time behind their actual occurrence, because there are details that have to be worked out and such.

Awesome news indeed when it's finalized. As for preferred writer assignments:

Christopher/Greg Cox= TOS
DRGIII=DS9
Kristen Bryer =Voyager
David Mack = The Next Generation

There are just so many great Trek Authors out there right now, that trying to limit the lines to just a couple seems depressing.

Una McCormack, & Wardilmore to name just a few.

DRG3's TP duology was great, and the thought of him continuing the tales of DS9 is fantastic! I wonder if it will jump to the timeframe from Raise the Dawn's epilogue (late 2384)?

I think that it really ought to be classified as a trilogy. What with RBoE.

After reading Plagues of Night / Raise the Dawn, I am pretty excited to hear that the DS9 series will continue in 2013 and that DRGIII will continue to build off of the material that he started in that excellent duology. I was a little underwhelmed with his Rough Beasts of Empire but was ridiculously pleased with his more recent installments. This feels like the beginning of a DS9 Relaunch 2.0 much in the same way Kirsten Beyer reset the VOY series.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about the idea of a sole author for each series. Yes, I love Beyer on VOY. She could write every damned book and I would be perfectly happy. But I generally like the idea of different authors getting to play in the Trek universe. Each author potentially brings something different. As happy as I am to have DRGIII write the next DS9 book, I'd also love to see David Mack, KRAD or S.D. Perry come back and contribute something to the series. On the flip side, I haven't been all too impressed with Michael Martin's solo efforts so I'd be quite disappointed if he became the sole author of the Titan series. That's definitely a series that has benefited from having multiple authors.

Although I do like several authors for each series, right now DRGIII has proven that he understands DS9 and his characters.
So, for the 20th anniversary novel, I can really only think of him as the writer. After that, I wouldn't mind seeing SD Perry again, or KRAD finally returning to Trek. Hell, right now I'm actually very curious as to what Andy Mangels can do by himself.

I'd like to see that as well. I also want to see more from Geoffrey Thorne, Olivia Woods, and Una McCormack. And a novel from Allyn Gibson. I love the established author set but fresh blood never hurts.
