I'm thinking that someone needs to check the definition of "iconic" here, because I'm not seeing it.

As much as I like Richard E. Grant, I agree that he's not iconic (Bill Nighy is certainly more iconic and he didn't get any of this fanfare before he was announced). That being said, I look forward to his appearance.

Depends - is it an original character, or is Eleven about to meet "Scream of the Shalka" Unbound-Nine this Xmas? THAT'D be a nice mystery to kick off the 50th Anniversary with - a Ninth Doctor from a universe where the Time Lords WON the Great Time War...

That would be pretty cool, especially if they brought back Derek Jacobi as The Master! However, I very much doubt this will happen.

I've enjoyed Richard E. Grant's work over the years (particularly, I think, in "The Scarlet Pimpernell") and he was a hoot in the Doctor Who parody but no, not iconic.

I like Richard E. Grant, he's quite well-known and he's a talented actor. Whether he's "iconic" or not doesn't seem to be relevant.

Withnail's got the same undeserved legendary standing among people as Life of Brian. It's ok with a few good lines. Worth seeing once and then not for another 5 to 10 years.

All this talk of Richard E. Grant reminds me of "Curse of the Fatal Death;" which reminds me of Hugh Grant; which reminds me of when I was watching The Pirates! Band of Misfits and realized that, with Hugh Grant as the Pirate Captain & David Tennant as Charles Darwin, you had both 10th Doctors in the same scene together.

I kinda like the idea of Richard E. Grant as an alternate universe 9th Doctor but I don't think they'll get nearly so fanwanky in a Christmas special. Especially not when the convoluted fanwank is what people complained about the most during Season 6.
