XXXth Olympiad - London

And once again, Phelps goes out in style, winning gold in his final race. He pretty much brought the team back to the lead (Japan was leading half way through) and Nathan Adrian brought it home. Great race, and to Phelps, it's been extremely fun watching him compete for the last 12 years. I hope he enjoys Swimming retirement, because he's deserved it.

I'm looking forward to tonight's swimming events. I will miss Michael Phelps. It has been a pleasure and a privilege watching him compete all these years.

Well now that swimming is over, I still have the gymnastics competitions to look forward to.

Wish they'd fuck football off out of the Olympics anyway - should have rugby in instead - it's a lot more aligned to being played in the Olympic spirit than football is.

Sevens is going to be part of Rio.

Wow what a day, was very lucky to have tickets to the Rowing and athletics yesterday so saw 5 golds and one silver being won!!

About the "honoraria" (prizes): US athletes don't take them unless they're ready to "retire" from Olympic competition, because the rules state that taking them makes them "pro" athletes and no longer eligable.

Meanwhile, these have been some of the saddest, dirtiest, most controversy-ridden games I've ever seen. Lost athletes, lost security keys. Cheating scandals all over the place. Incompetent officiating. Athletes' social media being censored to protect IOC ad revenue. The ticket/seating scandal.

Sad...just...sad at how far the Games have degenerated.

Doping doesn't seem to be a big issue in these events this time. I've heard only of a couple of athletes getting caught. Are the 2012 games controversy-ridden? Perhaps, but not moreso than previous Olympics ... The Twitter controversies are definitely new, since there are more users now, including many athletes themselves. The badminton cheaters were a disgrace to the games and to their countries. There will always be scoring and ranking problems, and athletes and coaches will contest the results. But life goes on. Legends like Michael Phelps, who epitomize the true Olympic spirit, will come and go.

I can live with diving in the Olympics, but synchronised diving?

And I'm dubious about including professional team sports that have a fanbase mostly outside the Olympics, basketball, football, handball, ice hockey - what's the point? Including baseball would make it even worse.

Instead, how about a return of rope pulling to the Olympics? I guarantee that would instantaneously be one of the most popular events, and pretty much every single nation on the planet should be able to field a competitive team.

You seem to be following a different Olympic games.

I don't know man. All this Michael Phelps greatest Olympian ever talk seems a bit much. Yeah, he's a badass swimmer, but some of it is the endless permutations of distances, strokes and relays. I know these days athletes have to be specialized, but he's not exactly Jim Thorpe for me.

Do they still have that race-walking bullshit in the Olympics? Trampoline is pretty terrible... it's hard enough trying to care about 'legit' sports that 99 percent of us completely ignore in between games without the complete nonsense events cluttering up the works.

And why the hell does equestrian exist in the Olympics. If you want to drag the Romney's fucking horse to Great Britain, make it a real competition. That's right, we need a good ol' fahsioned JOUST.

Seriously, you could add Olympic Nascar, Olympic Horseshoes and Olympic Beer Pong, and they would fit right in.

Foosball... I love it! The possibilities, a new super athlete could be born, they train for Foosball in the summer, and come the Winter Olympics:

Maybe Olympic Air Hockey as well.

I'm sure it requires a lot of work to be perfectly synchronised.
Yeah, I don't get the hate. It's pretty daunting to dive 10 metres: try doing that twisting and tumbling like mad, and at the same time of another diver. That's pretty badass.

And I have to laugh at being "hard enough" to care about less popular sports, and watching "nonsense events". Because God forbid they have to suffer through something they can just ignore if they want.

You must not have seen very many Games then, because these have been fairly mundane in terms of controversy and cheating compared to Games of the past; even recent ones.

How is Trampoline a sport but Baseball/Softball is not? Trampoline is something you do in your backyard, not something that should be in the Olympics.

And diving is something you do from a stool in an inflatable swimming pool...

If you want baseball in the games, it will have to stay at an amateurish level. It's not popular enough outside North America and some asian countries.
So because it's not popular in Europe it shouldn't be played? Baseball is incredibly popular in Latin America and, as you stated, in several countries in Asia to include Korea, Japan and Taiwan. If table tennis and trampolining are in the Olympics there really isn't a reason why baseball SHOULDN'T be included.

If the US didn't have good swimmers they would probably be behind Kazakhstan in the medal table. Another gold for GB. Great effort from the British team.
