Misc Av Thread: Nationality

I'd suggest putting the name of the country and maybe a brief phrase or two, just so people don't lose votes because of something unfamiliar.

It's always funny-- and a bit disturbing-- to see how other countries see America. I suppose it's no worse than how most Americans see other countries. :rommie:

Anyway, here's mine:

That's my America. :)

Omega IV?

Yeah, as soon as we clear out the Coms and the Yangs. :mallory:

I was wondering if anyone would bring that up. In fact, hearing Kirk read that when I was nine years old was so inspiring that it sent me off to the library to read the whole document. Although I was a little disappointed in most of the rest of it at the time (I was expecting more profundity and less procedures), it was one of the things that inspired my lifelong interest in the Revolution and the values of the Founding Fathers.

I really thought I'd make an effort in one of these some day soon, but as the only truly internationally recognized thing ever to happen here (in modern times) was the legalization of pornography (1969) I probably shouldn't make an avatar out of it... :p

I'm guessing here, but it is my guess that no one on this board would know this logo without text:

Even if it is the largest container ship operator and supply vessel operator in the world and based in Copenhagen.

The thing I could enter, doesn't need any words and makes as a surprisingly simple avatar (my entry!):

It even describes our playfulness and engineering & manufacturing skills rather elegantly -to a board full of playful techies anyway.

Ohh, perfect, trekkiedane! Yes, seeing that, I can definitely tell where it's from :) These are all really good entries from everyone. It's going to be tough to vote from the looks of things.

I must have seen thousands of their containers (if not hundreds of thousands) on ships, docks, rail cars, etc. at the Ports of Oakland and Los Angeles. I don't need to guess whose logo it is.

In honour of last nights amazing showing of Team GB athletes and in particular, the face of Team GB herself and the winner of the Heptathlon, Jessica Ennis, I'm going with avatar of her. I would do one of all three athletes who won gold last night in the Olympic Arena, but I'm not very good at GIFs as to me, the results last night showed just how multicultural Great Britain is.

If the no flag thing means, no flags what so ever and not just a flag as an avatar with nothing else, I'll enter this one instead.

I'd rather have expeceted you to use a pic of a soaking wet box of tea :D After all, that's how it all started.
That would be a great idea. It might be misinterpreted, though, because it's been co-opted by some extremists who are as ignorant of American history as they are of American values. I actually thought of using something derived from the Battle of Dorchester Heights:

DorchesterHeights_1.jpg

George Washington took command of the Continental Army at Dorchester Heights and ended the siege of Boston by driving off the British. Dorchester (actually a neighborhood of Boston) is my hometown and I lived just a stone's throw or so from where these events took place. But, as cool as that is, it's not exactly an iconic image of the US. :D
