I am curious, do people really believe this stuff, or it's just "I know it's not true but it doesn't hurt to check it out"? (even tho, obviously, it does hurt, since it supports all the silly sheanigans about it.)

I did suggest the possibility that people are attracted to astrology because it offers unconditional positivity and hope. People like hearing nice things about themselves.

I don't believe in astrology at all, but according to my birthdate, I'm a Capricorn.

It's all a load of nonsense. Perhaps mildly amusing, but serioulsy I could write something and there would be a fair chance of it being true for someone on the planet.

I missed it, my bad. I think you are right, but on the other hand I would hope that the social stigma of believing in such nonsense would outweight the positives of having their ego stroked. At least, that's the theory.

I'm a Capricorn, which is appropriate, because if I had to pick one power animal that summed up my personality perfectly, it would definitely be a fish-goat. Sometimes I want to climb mountains awkwardly on my two front legs while dragging my giant fish butt around, and sometimes when I'm horny (get it!) I just want to swim and deposit my seed all over the ocean. That's how I roll.

Science.

Hm. Lots of Virgos, so far. Apparently, lots of parents got busy at the New Year's Eve parties.
It's Trek BBS, what did you expect? ;)

I was 3 week early I should have been a Libra, oh well it is what is is, Virgo seems to fit

Everything said about the Libra sign in the link provided is off by several thousand light-years when applied to myself. I have never seen an accurate astrological description of the sign that includes anything even remotely close to myself.

Maybe I just have my own sign that isn't there? It'd make much more sense.

Maybe I should have been born early. Most of the Virgo aspects are dead-on. About 13 out of 16 of those points apply.

Iguana, unfortunately not only do people believe in this nonsense, a lot of people believe in it. I had a roommate who wept when the whole thing about there being a couple extra signs or some such nonsense hit the news a couple years ago! My current roommate also believes in it. It blows my mind that a functional, intelligent adult can fall for such foolishness. Even as a child I only thought of astrology as a funny game. If that sounds condescending it's because I meant it to be. Astrology is moronic, to quote the late Perry DeAngeles, "Astrology is as vacuous as the space it worships."

Courageous and assertive: No and no.
Tends to be physical and athletic: Physical - as in prone to throwing things across the room in anger, likes boxes of unbroken glass. Athletic, no.

 I love how every single description says that attractiveness is a characteristic of that particular sign! I guess there are no ugly people in the whole wide world after all! Anyone could find aspects of themselves in any one of those descriptions.

The only horoscope I ever got that was worth anything was from the Onion, and it read: "It's not how hard you beat the donkey, it's whether or not the donkey you are beating is on fire."

My parents owned a thick hardback book called "The New Astrologer" at a time when I was starting to develop an interest in science, mathematics and music. The only reason I peeked into that other book as a child was to find out the special planetary symbols for the (then) 9 planets of the Solar System, which our primary school teacher taught us about back then (she admittedly didn't know everything - she got the symbols for Venus and Mercury upside down and accepted our class wall drawing of Jupiter even though it looked exactly like a No Entry sign).

I have never sat down and read that book, as the other stuff about astronomy, the planet Earth, space exploration, the human body and the natural world, seemed much more interesting. The book is lying on a bookshelf somewhere.

My parents (or maybe it was my big sister) also collected a regular collectible magazine called "Zodiac" filled with various fortnightly topics about astrology, all collectible and kept in one of those binders that came free with Part 1. I remember using that binder as a means of housing my Star Trek trading cards instead. I have no idea what I did with those issues.

I think astrology is merely a bit of fun. I don't take it that seriously.

I had always wondered what might happen if some incompetent editor at a newspaper accidentally mixed up the day's horoscope predictions between two or more star signs and published them that day. I figured out that it probably wouldn't make any difference - people will always find something in any prediction that, at some level, they feel is relevant to themselves and to their complex lives.

Prof. Brian Cox has famously spoken out against astrology, dismissing it as "a load of rubbish" on his show Wonders of the Solar System - his exact words being:

Now, Jupiter is so different to our planet, a big ball of gas half a billion kilometres away. It’s difficult to see how it could have anything to do with us at all. But despite the fact that astrology is a load of rubbish, Jupiter can in fact, have a profound influence on our planet. And it’s through a force that surrounds us and penetrates us and binds the galaxy together. Gravity.
Amazingly, he was faced with quite a bit of criticism for that statement from various people as well as the astrological community, including arguments that his BBC show should have demonstrated "a fair and balanced representation" of astrology, accusing Cox of making his comment without an “alternative opinion being allowed,” and of not attempting to "consider such questions from the perspective of an astrologer."

Cox's "apology" in response is the stuff of legend:

In the film I said Astrology was "a load of rubbish" and the BBC asked for a statement about this after some criticism so I said "I apologise to the astrology community for not making myself clear, I should have said that this new age drivel is undermining the very fabric of our civilisation."

That wasn't issued by the BBC complaints department.
:guffaw:

(As an aside, I accidentally searched for "professor brian cox astrology apology" on Wikipedia, and got the message "Did you mean professor brian cox anthology ufology?" Funny, that.)

^I love it! My contempt for people who perpetuate such nonsense as fact is outweighed only by my pity for their level of self-delusion.
