Chick-fil-A digging themselves a hole

If you don't like Chick-fil-A's policies, then simply don't eat there, and don't give them your money. But don't attack me for not doing the same. I'm not anti-gay... I actually have a gay friend. It bothers me that gays face so much discrimination. But even having said that, I won't punish an individual who has a differing opinion than mine for standing firm to it. He is just as entitled to his own views as I am to mine, and you are to yours. I have already stated that I feel it is remarkably bad business, to have said what he said, but he said it, and that's that.

You continue to miss the point. CFA donates money (the stuff they earn from customers using their services) to groups actively working to curb the advancement of rights for gay people. By eating there you are funding hate towards a group of people. It's one thing if the CEO simply spoke out against gays (enough for me to stop eating there, especially when he played the old "the Bible says so" card) it's a whole other customer profits are being used to fund organizations that want to squash rights to a group of people.

Have you bought anything at Best Buy, Target, Urban Outfitters, or fueled up at Exxon? If you have, you are funding hate towards a group of people. Specifically gay people. I'll bet many here have spent more at these places than someone who eats every meal at Chick-Fil-A, all year long.

And the list of corporations and CEO's who donate to the same charities or anti-gay politicians is going to be a very long one.

As Jesus said, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Of course after that he said, "Ouch! Damnit mom!"

The actions of others don't make Chick-fil-A's less odious.

In the interest of not presenting a distorted record, it should be pointed out that Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel apologized to Target employees for donating funds to MN Forward:

Civic Activity A Message From Gregg Steinhafel, Chairman, President and CEO

8/5/2010

Dear Target Leaders,

I have heard from many of you, and our team members, over the past week regarding Target's contribution to MN Forward, and I appreciate your engagement and candor, both of which clearly demonstrate your loyalty and passion for our company.

In situations like this, it is often difficult to find the right words, but I would like to respond with the same honesty you have shown me.

The intent of our political contribution to MN Forward was to support economic growth and job creation. While I firmly believe that a business climate conducive to growth is critical to our future, I realize our decision affected many of you in a way I did not anticipate, and for that I am genuinely sorry.

We remain fully committed to fostering an environment that supports and respects the rights and beliefs of all individuals. The diversity of our team is an important aspect of our unique culture and our success as a company, and we did not mean to disappoint you, our team or our valued guests.

Going forward, we will soon begin a strategic review and analysis of our decision-making process for financial contributions in the public policy arena. And later this fall, Target will take a leadership role in bringing together a group of companies and partner organizations for a dialogue focused on diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including GLBT issues.

Thank you for sharing your input and for your continued commitment to making Target an even stronger company.

Sincerely,
Gregg Steinhafel
Chairman, President and CEO

How the hell does this brand of Christianity even reconcile itself with existing in a democratic society anyway? It's one thing to bend knee to a God-King, but quite another to legislate that others do the same.

Seriously, the disconnect must be immense.

Not at all.

As long as we're in charge (Christians in general) and our values dominate society anyway we're quite happy.

They do not now, of course but having it our way for 150 years give or take (in the U.S.) gives us hope that one day we'll have it our way again.

Things change. Sometimes for the better (to my perspective).

Citgo is a partially state-owned Venezuelan oil company overseen by an authoritarian firebrand who hates America and cozies up to some of this country's enemies. I choose not to gas up at Citgo stations because I don't want my money going into Hugo Chavez's pockets or those of the cronies who surround him down in Caracas.

It's the same with Chick-Fil-A so far as I'm concerned. Even if I didn't already dislike the company and its food I'd steer a wide path around them because of the same-sex issue.

In the case of Best Buy and Target there it seems like there's a few degrees of separation between the business entity and the action(s) of hate. Through Senators who speak out certain ways, through PACs, etc. Whereas CFA donates directly to a group specializing specifically in furthering intolerance and hate.

CFA also does it openly and proudly with a business head who stands on a moral high-ground seeing himself more superior than homosexuals and given his statements it's not too far to reach to see that it has to bleed over in business practices.

Best Buy giving money to a man running for Senate with extreme views is worlds away from the sole owner of a company donating money to a group that wants to curb rights for others and then expresses his views that God punishes America for supporting gay rights.

Yes, there are degrees, and I was wondering how much of the cost of a chicken sandwhich ever ends up funding an ad against gays. Chick-Fil-A takes in $4.1 billion a year. Does anyone know the amounts that were given?

Almost every dollar we spend has some tiny fraction going to a cause we detest. Lots of companies donated to environmental organizations that were instrumental in making sure the UN suppressed the use of DDT to fight malaria, killing tens of millions of minority babies. Sometimes it gets even more bizarre. A few months ago I bought a thumb drive at Walgreens and the tax money went to the NIH which sent it to the Aurora shooter to buy the bullet that shot the six-year old. :(

Boy, the thread got awfully quiet all of the sudden. Is everyone suspiciously PM'ing each other about the dead Chick-Fil-A vice president of public relations, trying to figure out which of you offed him? It had to be gay ninjas!

And your dominance came at the expense of a lot of people, you know. It's no coincidence you were tossed out on your holy asses as that began to change.

The death was obviously just really horrible timing and my heart goes out to the guy's family if he had one. But no, I don't think that the righteous indignation over the company's same-sex stances and practices is even remotely to blame.

Sometimes terrible and tragic health crises happen in the middle of controversy or scandal. It happens.

Well said. May he rest in peace.

I know, you'd think there was a major world event going on tonight or that it was late evening in parts of the country where people are preparing for bed either with their children or themselves.

I'm still here! It's about 7:30 on a Friday evening and I have no plans. :(

Yeah, you West Coast people have your night just starting. I'm an hour from bed.

I'm on the East Coast and it's 10:30, but as hot as it is outside right now you'd think it were still three or four the afternoon.

Not as nasty as it was a couple of weeks ago, but I've had to crank the AC higher than I want.

TBBS needs a sweating-from-the-heat emoticon. Let that be the next request to the Lords That Be™.

Been nice and cooler here the last couple days but that'll change in the next week. 9:30 and it's 83 right now outside, my apartment thermostat remains around 70. I'm watching "The Big Goodbye" on TNG BD right now.

How you live your life is all about choice, and you can chose to follow that path, or you can chose not to.

And you've chosen to be a bigot, and it's time that you take responsibility for it.

Apply a name, a label to me if you must, I know it makes you all feel better. I'm not afraid to be called names for these beliefs, heck, Jesus was nailed to the cross because of the things he said. If he can bare that for our sins, I can certainly bare being labeled a bigot.

No, no. You're not being "labeled" a bigot, or "called names" because that implies that people have got it wrong. Your words and support of an organization that uses it's profits to actively deny people rights is what **makes** you a bigot. You complaining about being "labeled" would be like the sun whining about being "labeled" a sun when it fits all the requirements for being a sun.

Oh and the Jesus comment.....there isn't a "LOLZ!!!1!one!" big enough for that one.

And if the person you call god does exist, I say bring it. Why wait? He can show up right now because as far as I'm concerned, he has some explaining to do himself.

You're awesome.

Hell is a real place, and I just gotta say, it's not a place I wanna go, it's no joke. I'm constantly amazed how many people aren't afraid of it. It's going to be a terrible, terrible place, and it is so easy to avoid. Again, another choice I suppose we must make in life. Put your faith in Jesus, ask him to forgive you for you sins, call out to him and ask him to save you from sin, enjoy the peace that overcomes you and the knowledge that you are on the path to Heaven, following a righteous God, a savior who wants the best for you, Jesus is that way, and the only way. I don't want anyone here to end up in the other place, I beg of you, do this now, this is your chance, your life on this Earth is your chance.

Ok, any finite amount of time set against infinity is basically non-existent. Imagine two lines being drawn parallel to each other and these lines represent "time". Every inch is one year. One line stops at fifty trillion billenia. Set against infinity that vast amount of time becomes utterly insignificant and compared to the never ending line, it would soon disappear. So this idea that people here will suffer an infinity of torment for a measly 80 years (if you're lucky to make it to 80) is so monumentally ridiculous as to be beyond definition.

This kind of scare tactic worked on the primitives, it doesn't work anymore.

God said them, and it's true.

No, you're just taking someone else's word that god said it and it never occurred to you that they might've been lying or just plain wrong.

Why is it so hard for you and others to understand that the Old Testament/Old Covenant is not considered for Christians or binding upon them in any way?

Then you guys need to stop whining about the 10 Commandments being taken down in government buildings.

But due to the extreme level of evil in the world, God had to introduce the Old Convenant as a way of attempting to prepare the world for it.

Or it could've created humans already prepared from the fucking beginning and avoided untold misery.

I'm not oppressing anyone's rights. Just cause I like to eat at Chick-Fil-A? I like their food, sue me.

Ah, so now it's "hey fellas, I just like eating a good ole' Chick-Fil-A sandwhich....Where's the harm in that?"

One more time: When the money that you spend at an organization is being used to deny people rights, then yes, you are helping to provide the funding that they need to be successful. There's no walking away from that or playing the victim, especially if you're likening the actions of homosexuals to pedophelia, or beastiality. Neither you, nor anyone else, gets to make that kind of a statement then complain or play victim when identified as a bigot.

Time to be a man, and take responsibility for your views. I'm sorry that you don't like dealing with the consequences of those views, but really, that's too bad.
