Series 7 FINALLY Starts Shooting

So what? We're not going to have to wait as long between seasons after this.

And what's that based on? I guess you haven't seen any of those recent interviews with Moffat where he talks about "starving the audience" being a good thing and hinting that he'd be fine with the same 18 month break between series that you get with "Sherlock"?

Quick update from the new DWM. As of the start of July when his Production Notes column was written Moffat still hadn't finished the Xmas Special script that he started back in March and he still has to write the first post-Xmas script too.* Interestingly (and tellingly) it appears that he won't be writing the S7 Finale, the first one not by the showrunner since the series returned.

*Which will probably end up being the last script shot for this series at the end of the year.

I wonder whether it'll be based on a story by Moffat, or instead any arc elements meant to be addressed in the finale will be left floating until the next season.

It's from academia, but "publish or perish" is applicable most every where.

If all his peons do the work and he collects the checks, it might as well be Star Trek ten years ago.

There's nothing that says he has to write the finale I guess.

The script editor/show runner writing the finale each year is simply a conceit that began with RTD. I don't think having another writer handle it is particularly significant one way or the other.

Chris Boucher explained it best when he was script editing Blakes 7 - He says Terry Nation advised him "to always write the premiere and finale of any series, because that way, if there was a limited repeat run not covering the whole season, they always have to repeat yours!" (and, by extension, pay the residuals)

If there's any kind of arc payoff in episode 14, that'll make it pretty clear that Moffat initially intended to write the episode and just ran out of time. And frankly, it'd be unrealistic if three-plus months to write one script didn't cause a change in his plans.

Just to correct myself, he is writing the Finale. The orginal story I read on what he'd talked about hadn't been too clear about it.

Here's the proper details*:

And people might want to make sure they're sitting down before reading this bit:

*When he mentions that the writer of Episode 12 is in a "distant land" one name springs immediately to mind...

Are we meant to infer from that quotation which name springs to your mind? because personally I haven't the faintest clue.

Neil Gaiman is the only one that I can think of, since RTD has returned to the UK...

I certainly didn't think it was too much of a head-scratcher! He's a very busy man though, so it could turn out to be someone else entirely.

There's a lot of DW fans working in US TV these days. Dan Harmon's a big fan and needs the work since they fired him from "Community". The guy who created "Leverage" is always sticking in DW references. And Javier Grillo-Marxuach not only used DW character names in "The Middleman" but had the 1st Doctor's goodbye speech to Susan pretty much verbatim in the unmade script for the series final episode.

To be honest, I thought the "next full series not until 2014" news would be more interesting...

Honestly, news of a new Neil Gaiman episode (or another American writer joining the stable) would be news.

"No full series until 2014" is pretty much what I expected (which would put the next series as far out from series 7 as series 7 was from series 6).

Michael Chabon is a possibility.

It is interesting, but it's also not unexpected. The maths for anything otherwise wasn't working.

I wonder if those 50th anniversary specials will be interconnected in any way, and how may there will be.

I would love to see another Gaiman episode or special myself.

My guess is three Anniversary Specials. Contractual Obligation of the Daleks, The Eight Doctors, parts 1 and 2. Plus a Christmas Special.

I guess we still could end up with more Doctor Who then ever in 2013 depending on how many specials there are and also how long they are in duration?

Surprised no one has mentioned that Matt seems to be suggesting he'll he around for S8?
